Pill cockroach

The pill cockroach (Hime-marugokiburi) is a small cockroach that can roll its body into a ball, much like a pill bug. It lives in forests from southern Kyushu through the Ryukyu Islands and is active on tree bark. Adults are about 13.6 mm long (a record of a female from Yoro Island), and the curled-up shape looks nothing like a typical cockroach. The Japanese population was redescribed as a new species in 2025, so care information is still limited. It is rated for intermediate keepers who are comfortable observing closely and adjusting the setup.

Lifespan
Little data
Size
Total length about 13.6 mm (a female recorded on Yorojima)
Diet
Little data (active on tree bark in forest)
Enclosure
In the wild it is active at night on the bark of forest trees. Provide bark-covered wood and hardwood leaf litter for climbing and cover.
Temperature & Humidity
Little temperature or humidity data exist. It comes from forests in the Nansei Islands, so avoid winter cold and dry air.
Diet & Feeding
Little is known of its diet in the wild. Offer small amounts of leaf litter, rotten wood and prepared insect food, and continue with whatever it eats.
Temperament & Venom
Harmless. When alarmed it rolls into a ball to protect itself.
Notes
Japanese populations were described as P. horaianus in 2025, so older literature and sales labels giving P. pygmaeus usually refer to the same animal. Keep stock from different islands apart, never release captive animals, and use a gap-free container for this small insect.

About Pill cockroach

The pill cockroach is a small cockroach that curls into a ball like a pill bug. Here is its habitat, care level (intermediate), and what to know before you bring one home.

7 things to know before welcoming a Pill cockroach

  1. 1Rolling up and handling

This small cockroach can roll its body into a ball like a pill bug. It may curl up when disturbed, so keep direct handling to a minimum and move the container gently to avoid dropping or crushing it.

  2. 2Intermediate difficulty

Its care difficulty is rated intermediate. Because little is documented about keeping this species, be ready to watch the enclosure and adjust humidity and airflow as you go. If you are new to keeping invertebrates, ask the seller about their setup before deciding.

  3. 3A bark-dwelling species

It lives in forests from southern Kyushu through the Ryukyu Islands and is active on tree bark. In captivity, adding bark pieces, rotting wood, and leaf litter gives it hiding places and footing that come closer to its natural habitat.

  4. 4Humidity, warmth, airflow

Its native range is forest in warm regions. Avoid cold and overly dry conditions, keep the substrate moderately damp, and provide enough ventilation so the enclosure does not turn stuffy. Adjust where you place the enclosure as room temperatures change through the seasons.

  5. 5Preventing escapes

Even adults are only about 13.6 mm long (a record of a female from Yoro Island), so they can slip out through small gaps. Choose a case with fine ventilation mesh and a tightly fitting lid, and check where the insects are before you open it.

  6. 6Feeding and cleaning

Detailed husbandry records are scarce, so it helps to follow general cockroach care: offer small amounts of fruit or insect jelly and watch how they eat. Remove leftovers promptly, since they can cause mold and fruit flies, and adjust the amount to match appetite.

  7. 7Checks before adoption

Lifespan is poorly documented and not well established. Use the listing page or a message to the seller to confirm whether the animal is captive-bred or wild-collected, and what setup and food it has been kept on. The Japanese population was only redescribed as a new species in 2025, so classification and naming details may still be updated.
