A diurnal species of savanna, dry shrubland, highland savanna and coastal areas. Base management on a fairly dry setup with a strong basking spot and genuinely cool shade in the same enclosure. Because it lays down fat for the dry season, avoid overfeeding year-round.

Enclosure

It is kept in a terrarium furnished with rock and driftwood as refuges. In the wild it shelters in rock crevices, at the bases of trees and under fallen timber, so provide several gaps its flattened body can enter. Seat rocks on the enclosure floor before adding substrate and fix them so they cannot collapse.

Diet & Feeding

Strictly carnivorous, feeding on insects, other arthropods and worms. In captivity use crickets and roaches as the staple, dusted with calcium and vitamin supplements, and provide UVB since it is diurnal and basks.

Temperament

Timid, retreating into rock crevices or under timber when startled. Males are aggressive towards other males, so keep only one male per enclosure. It is comparatively hardy for a cordylid, and the nominate subspecies is traded cheaply.

Notes

Listed on CITES Appendix II as Cordylus spp. since 2 January 2017. Being Appendix II, it needs no Japanese registration certificate. The IUCN assesses it as Least Concern. It appears neither on the schedule of designated dangerous animals under the Order for Enforcement of the Act on Welfare and Management of Animals nor on Japan's list of invasive alien species. Some authors treat the subspecies jonesii as a full species, so check locality and scientific name when buying.
