Enclosure

A rule of thumb is about 38 litres of water per 2.5 cm of shell length, so a full-grown animal needs close to 400 litres. It is sensitive to poor water quality, so use filtration rated for at least twice the water volume and an aqua-terrarium with a generous land area.

Juveniles are carnivorous and shift towards plants as they grow. Build the diet around aquatic turtle pellets with fish, insects, aquatic plants and algae alongside; captive animals take prepared foods readily.

Temperament

Placid and hardy, but sensitive to poor water quality. Very frequent water changes with tap water predispose it to fungal skin disease; keeping the water stable and providing a good basking site prevents this.
