Aim for 32-35 C in the basking area, 24-29 C on the cool side and 20-23 C at night. It comes from humid tropical habitat, so hold the humidity at 70-90 per cent; spikes towards 100 per cent do no harm. If nights fall below 10 C, provide a shelter heated by a ceramic heat emitter or similar.

Enclosure

It needs high humidity, so an enclosure with too much ventilation is unsuitable. Use a deep, moisture-retaining substrate and dampen it with a mister or pressure sprayer. It is diurnal, so install UVB lighting and run the lights through the day.

Diet & Feeding

It eats mainly flowers and fruit, along with leaves, bark, roots, herbs and mushrooms, plus insects, land snails and carrion. Build the diet on plant matter with a tortoise food and a small amount of animal protein alongside.

Temperament

Placid and tames readily. Each extra animal needs more floor space and another basking area, which quickly becomes demanding, so keeping one tortoise is the practical choice.

Notes

It was covered by the Appendix II listing of the old genus Geochelone when CITES came into force in 1975 and of the whole family Testudinidae from 1977, the current family listing taking effect on 2 January 2017. Appendix II species need no individual registration certificate in Japan, and it is neither a designated dangerous animal nor an invasive alien species there. The trade is supplied mostly by captive-bred and farmed animals.
