As a desert lizard it needs a very warm basking site: a basking surface of 43-52C, a cool zone of 26-31C and night-time temperatures above 18C. Humidity anywhere in the range 15-65 per cent is considered acceptable. Its UVB requirement is high, with a target UV index of 4.5-6.0 at the basking site.

Enclosure

A minimum enclosure of about 120 x 60 x 60 cm is recommended even for one animal, and larger is better. Build a Retes stack of flat stones or boards with spacers, giving it secure crevices where it can choose its own basking temperature. Heat mats, heat tape and hot rocks are not appropriate basking heat sources.

Diet & Feeding

It is primarily herbivorous, eating leaves, flowers and fruit and occasionally insects. Build the captive diet around leafy greens and flowers. Any plants added to the enclosure must be non-toxic, as they will be nibbled.

Temperament

It is harmless to people and, when startled, retreats into rock crevices rather than attacking. Males must never be housed together. If keeping more than one, add at least 30 cm to the length and width per extra animal and provide several basking sites and hides to reduce competition.

Notes

The species is not listed in the CITES appendices and has no Species+ entry; its congener Sauromalus varius is on Appendix I, but this species is not. It is neither a specified animal nor an invasive alien species under Japanese law. It brumates in winter in the wild, and reducing winter temperatures and day length in captivity is recommended practice.
