Enclosure

Keep it in an aqua-terrarium. It is sensitive to poor water quality, and frequent changes with unconditioned tap water often bring on fungal skin disease. Stabilise conditions with a generous water volume, effective filtration or green water. If kept in an outdoor pond, guard against escapes.

Notes

Listed on CITES Appendix II in 2013, so no Japanese registration certificate is required, and assessed as Vulnerable on Japan's national Red List. It hybridises with Reeves' and Chinese stripe-necked turtles, so do not house it with other species; hybrids with the Chinese stripe-necked turtle are designated invasive alien species in Japan. Never release or abandon animals outdoors, which spreads genetic introgression. Juveniles are sometimes sold under the trade name zenigame, but in recent years that name has usually referred to juvenile Chinese pond turtles, a different species. A label reading simply ishigame may likewise refer to the Asian yellow pond turtle, so confirm the scientific name Mauremys japonica when buying.
