Place a rock at one end of the enclosure and set the basking lamp so that its surface reaches 46-49 C. Let the far end run cooler to create a gradient, but do not let it fall below 16 C. Its UV requirement is high, so add a strong UVB lamp.

Enclosure

Keep conditions near-desert, below 30 per cent relative humidity, and avoid damp during brumation as well. Hatchlings can start in a tank of about 75 litres, but by two years of age the lizard needs something like 150 litres or a custom enclosure of similar size. Put a large flat rock at one end as a basking site and a small shelter at the other.

Diet & Feeding

Herbivorous: build the diet on leafy greens such as komatsuna and on wild plants like dandelion and clover. Birdseed, prepared tortoise or herbivorous-lizard diets and vegetables such as carrot and squash can be added. It need not be fed every day.

Temperament

A threatened animal lashes its tail, hisses with a rasping call and bolts for a burrow. Captive animals also swing the tail when touched, and the spines hurt. Many adults spend most of the day resting.

Notes

The genus Uromastyx has been on CITES Appendix II since 4 February 1977. Appendix II species need no individual registration certificate in Japan, and the lizard is neither a designated dangerous animal nor an invasive alien species. It is eaten within its range, where the meat of the thick tail is especially prized.
