Temperature & Humidity: Aim for 29-32 C in the basking area and 22-25 C on the cool side, turning the heat off at night so the enclosure cools. Average humidity should be 50-70 percent, naturally dipping by day and rising at night. Mist as needed and line the cool hide with damp sphagnum moss to create a humid retreat.
Enclosure: Slender though it looks, this is an explorer, and the stated minimum for one adult is about 180 x 90 x 90 cm. Start juveniles in something small and move them up, to an enclosure at least 90 cm long and beyond. Use a soil-based substrate with clean leaf litter on top, which both holds humidity and gives the snake something to explore. Remove faeces and urates daily.
Diet & Feeding: It takes mainly rodents, along with birds and eggs. In captivity offer thawed frozen mice or rats sized to the snake. It is active both day and night, so feeding time is flexible. Leave it alone for a while after a meal to avoid regurgitation.
Temperament: When startled it freezes and wrinkles into kinks, and when cornered it either flees or vibrates its tail; researchers do not regard the tail vibration as rattlesnake mimicry. Keep it singly. Texas animals have a reputation for being feisty, so build up handling gradually.
Notes: It is not listed in the CITES appendices. It is neither a specified animal under the Appended Table of Japan's Act on Welfare and Management of Animals nor an invasive alien species under the Invasive Alien Species Act. The IUCN Red List assesses it as Least Concern. The name black rat snake is also used for Pantherophis alleghaniensis, a different species found east of the Mississippi, so confirm the scientific name Pantherophis obsoletus when buying.
