Ornate Uromastyx

The Ornate Uromastyx is one of the most vividly colored members of the Uromastyx genus. Males display striking backgrounds of green, blue, or red overlaid with dark bands and yellow spots, while females wear a more subdued pale brown coat marked with faint yellow stripes, giving the species a clear visual contrast between the sexes. Diurnal by nature, they're active during the day and enjoy basking under light. They may lash their tails when handled, so take care when touching them. Reaching roughly 35cm in total length, they're a species keepers can look forward to living alongside for many years. Their largely plant-based diet and preference for arid setups make them a rewarding choice for anyone drawn to desert-style vivarium design.

Ornate Uromastyx key facts

Care level
Intermediate
Lifespan
Over 25 years under good care, with 60 years considered possible
Size
Total length about 35cm; up to 37cm in U. o. ornata and 34cm in U. o. philbyi
Temperature
Basking surface 49-55°C, cool side about 29°C
Humidity
20〜30%
Diet
Leafy greens, wild plants such as dandelion and clover, birdseed and prepared herbivorous-lizard diets
Temperature & Humidity
The basking surface must be very hot, 49-55 C, with the cool side around 29 C. Because the heat source is localised, use an enclosure large enough that the whole cage does not overheat. Its UV requirement is high, so fit a strong UVB lamp, and let the temperature fall a little at night.
Enclosure
Keep humidity very low, at 20-30 per cent; levels consistently above that make the lizard ill. Suitable substrates include reptile sand, ground corn cob and akadama soil. It digs burrows up to a metre deep in the wild, so a deep substrate is preferable; where that is impractical, provide hides of brick and rock.
Diet & Feeding
Herbivorous: build the diet on leafy greens such as komatsuna and on wild plants like dandelion and clover. Birdseed, prepared tortoise or herbivorous-lizard diets and vegetables such as carrot and squash can be added. It need not be fed every day.
Temperament
A threatened animal lashes its tail, hisses with a rasping call and bolts for a burrow. Captive animals also swing the tail when touched, and the spines hurt. Many adults spend most of the day resting.
Notes
The genus Uromastyx has been on CITES Appendix II since 4 February 1977. Appendix II species need no individual registration certificate in Japan, and the lizard is neither a designated dangerous animal nor an invasive alien species. It is eaten within its range, where the meat of the thick tail is especially prized.

About Ornate Uromastyx

The Ornate Uromastyx is a vividly colored lizard with striking sexual dimorphism, generally considered suitable for intermediate reptile keepers. Reaching about 35cm in length, this diurnal, basking-loving species is known for its long-term companionship in captivity.

7 things to know before welcoming a Ornate Uromastyx

  1. 1Best Suited to Intermediate Keepers

The Ornate Uromastyx is a hardy species, but keeping one well calls for solid reptile-keeping fundamentals like temperature and humidity control and proper UV lighting, which is why it's generally recommended for intermediate keepers. First-time reptile owners should make sure their setup is fully prepared before bringing one home.

  2. 2Thrives in Hot, Dry Conditions

Native to rocky, arid regions, this species prefers dry conditions with a strong temperature gradient. Set up a basking spot alongside a cooler zone, and avoid letting humidity climb too high.

  3. 3UVB and Basking Are Essential

As a diurnal species that loves to bask, it needs UVB lighting to maintain healthy bone development. Pair this with a basking lamp to give it a proper thermal gradient for regulating body temperature.

  4. 4Diet Is Mostly Plant-Based

This species is typically kept on a diet centered on leafy greens and wild plants such as dandelion and clover. Nutritional balance and calcium supplementation should be adjusted to suit each individual's condition.

  5. 5Handle With Care

When threatened, this species whips its tail as a warning, and even in captivity it may lash out with its tail when touched. The spines can hurt quite a bit on contact, so handle with care and let it adjust to its surroundings gradually rather than forcing contact.

  6. 6Males and Females Look Different

Males show vivid coloring with green, blue, or red backgrounds marked by dark bands and yellow spots, while females have a more muted pale brown tone with faint yellow stripes. The female's underside is whitish.

  7. 7A Long-Term Commitment

With proper care, this species can live 25 years or more, with some reports suggesting a lifespan of up to 60 years. Before bringing one home, consider whether you can maintain its care and environment over the long haul.
