Breeding & Egg-laying

Adults and larvae alike live inside damp, brown-rotted fallen logs, most often beech and Japanese oak but also katsura and fir. The larval period runs one to two years depending on the climate. The robber fly Laphria mitsukurii is known to parasitise the pupae.

Cohabitation

It is small with short mandibles and not a fighter, but the beetles should not be crowded inside one piece of wood. Even among small mountain species, beetles of different species or localities should not share the same log.

Lifespan & Rearing Period

The adults are thought to be active in late summer, and those that eclose as summer ends overwinter in the pupal chamber. Adults take little beyond water, and although they can fly they leave the wood only when seeking a new breeding site.

Heat is the commonest cause of death, so do not keep this beetle where summer temperatures cannot be controlled. Three subspecies are recognised by region, the nominate form plus monticola and nodai, and beetles from different localities should not be mixed.
