Golden Gecko

The Golden Gecko is an arboreal gecko native to a limited range in southern Vietnam. Its name comes from its tan-to-gold coloring, and despite being nocturnal, it's a hardy species well suited to reptile keepers who are just starting out. Adults reach about 18–20 cm including tail for males and 15–18 cm for females, making this a species best enjoyed through observation rather than handling. Watching it move actively around its enclosure after dark is genuinely rewarding for anyone who enjoys quiet evening company from an animal. It is not subject to CITES.

About Golden Gecko

Golden Gecko: a hardy, gold-toned arboreal gecko from southern Vietnam, popular with beginners. Lives 8+ years and reaches about 18-20 cm. Key care points and FAQs inside.

7 things to know before welcoming a Golden Gecko

  1. 1Vertical Enclosure Setup

As an arboreal species, Golden Geckos settle in best with a taller enclosure rather than one with a large floor area. Adding climbing branches and epiphytic plants gives them places to rest, since they tend to tuck away in cover during the day.

  2. 2Nocturnal Activity

Golden Geckos are rarely visible during the day and usually rest quietly out of sight. Activity picks up after dark, so checking the enclosure in the evening is the best way to observe natural behavior.

  3. 3Built for Viewing, Not Handling

Many individuals are naturally shy, and frequent handling can be stressful for them. This species is best enjoyed by watching its behavior through the enclosure glass rather than through regular physical contact.

  4. 4Temperature and Humidity

Coming from a tropical region, Golden Geckos need consistent warmth and humidity. Letting the enclosure dry out too much can lead to incomplete shedding, so maintaining humidity is an ongoing task.

  5. 5Feeding Basics

This is an insectivorous species, typically fed live insects like crickets or prepared insect-based diets. Feeding frequency and portion size should be adjusted to the individual gecko's size and condition.

  6. 6Hardy, But Still Watch Closely

Golden Geckos are considered easy to keep, but hardiness doesn't mean they need no attention. Keeping an eye on appetite, shedding, and body condition helps catch small changes early.

  7. 7A Long-Term Commitment

Golden Geckos typically live 8 years or more, and some individuals surpass 15 years under good care. Before bringing one home, it's worth confirming you can provide consistent care over that timeframe.

Frequently asked questions about Golden Gecko

Q.Can beginners keep a Golden Gecko?
A.Yes, Golden Geckos are considered hardy and beginner-friendly. That said, basic care like temperature and humidity management is still required, so it helps to review the care routine before bringing one home.
Q.How big do they get?
A.Adults reach about 18-20 cm including tail for males and 15-18 cm for females. That places them in the mid-size range among geckos.
Q.What is their lifespan?
A.Their lifespan is 8 years or more, and under good care some individuals live past 15 years. It's worth setting up their environment with that long-term commitment in mind.
Q.Can you handle them like a pet?
A.Many individuals are shy, so frequent handling isn't well suited to this species. It's better enjoyed by watching its nighttime behavior through the enclosure rather than through regular physical contact.
Q.Are there any legal restrictions to be aware of?
A.The Golden Gecko is not subject to CITES, the convention on international trade in endangered species.
