Figures published for the genus give a hot spot of 28-29C, general air temperature of 24-27C and night-time temperatures of 18-21C. Average humidity is 60-80 per cent, naturally rising at night. Mist in the evening to raise humidity and never let the substrate dry out completely.

Enclosure

A single adult is said to do well in a ten-gallon aquarium, though some sources recommend a larger 24 x 18 x 18 inch, roughly 29-gallon, enclosure. Provide a moisture-retentive substrate deep enough to burrow into and never gravel, plus a shallow water dish it can half submerge in.

Diet & Feeding

It is carnivorous, taking crickets, roaches, mealworms, earthworms and feeder fish. Dust feeders with a calcium supplement at every other feeding for adults and at every feeding for juveniles. It will take pinkie mice, but these can cause organ problems, so limit how often they are offered.

Temperament

It will bite at anything that moves, so it must be housed alone to prevent cannibalism. Feed with tongs or a dish rather than by hand. It is normally almost motionless, buried in the substrate with only its eyes showing.

Notes

The species is not listed in the CITES appendices, and it is neither a specified animal nor an invasive alien species under Japanese law. Hybrids with the ornate horned frog and other congeners are traded under the name fancy horned frog, so check the lineage of any animal you buy. As an amphibian its skin is sensitive, so wash and wet your hands before handling it.
