Temperature & Humidity: Keep the basking surface at 40-48 C, the cool side at 25-32 C and nights at 20-26 C. A clear thermal gradient is the key to keeping this species, and animals do better when the enclosure cools properly at night. Eastern species such as this one suit an average humidity of 50-70 percent, higher than the western desert forms.
Enclosure: Small but very active, it needs a large floor area. Give adults at least 90 x 45 x 45 cm, and preferably something like 90 x 60 x 60 cm. Stack rock to create basking sites and hides and to provide the height it likes to leap between. Seat rocks on the enclosure floor before adding substrate.
Diet & Feeding: It feeds mainly on insects and other arthropods and will take small lizards; it also eats flowers, leaves and fruit at times. In captivity use crickets and dubia roaches as the staple, dusted with calcium and vitamin supplements, and provide UVB for this diurnal species. Appetite can fall off seasonally.
Temperament: Territorial, and because it preys on small lizards it will bite cage mates or cannibalise animals of a different size. Keep it singly as a rule and pair animals only under supervision for breeding. It is fast and a strong jumper, so guard against escapes when opening the enclosure.
Notes: Not listed on any CITES appendix. The IUCN assesses it as Least Concern. It appears neither on the schedule of designated dangerous animals under the Order for Enforcement of the Act on Welfare and Management of Animals nor on Japan's list of invasive alien species. It is not difficult to keep, but it has quirks such as seasonal swings in appetite and a strong territorial streak, and securing a proper thermal gradient is the key to long-term success.
