Enclosure: Keep it in an aquarium with a generous water area. It is semi-aquatic and juveniles stay in water, but adults also forage on land, so provide a dry land section. For nesting it needs a diggable substrate mimicking the bare ground at a water edge.
Diet & Feeding: Omnivorous, taking fish, tadpoles, insects, small crustaceans, earthworms, leaves, algae and fruit. Most individuals feed readily and take prepared pellets well in captivity.
Temperament: It is poorly tolerant of company and may bite other animals. Males in particular force copulation on both sexes and on other species, so house it singly as a rule.
Notes: Listed on CITES Appendix II; because it is an Appendix II species no individual registration certificate is required in Japan. It is neither a designated dangerous animal under the Act on Welfare and Management of Animals nor an invasive alien species, although hybrids with the Chinese stripe-necked turtle are designated invasive alien species. Escaped and abandoned M. m. kami have been found across Japan and hybridisation with native populations is a recognised genetic concern. Never release or abandon animals outdoors.
