Peacock Gudgeon

The Peacock Gudgeon is a small goby-like fish prized for the shimmering blue spots scattered across its body, reminiscent of a peacock's feathers. Reaching just 5-7cm as an adult, it stays compact while offering a calm temperament that suits both species tanks and peaceful community setups. With driftwood or rockwork for cover it settles in calmly, and you can enjoy watching it swim from the bottom up into the mid-water every day. Given the right conditions, pairs can also breed, letting keepers watch the male guard the eggs and fry. It can be fed frozen foods such as bloodworms as well as prepared foods, and it prefers animal-based food. Its care requirements are considered beginner-friendly. With a lifespan of around 3-5 years, it can be a long-term companion in a home aquarium.

About Peacock Gudgeon

Peacock Gudgeon: a small, peacock-patterned freshwater goby with a calm temperament, great for community tanks. Beginner-friendly, 5-7cm, lives 3-5 years.

7 things to know before welcoming a Peacock Gudgeon

  1. 1Tank Size and Hiding Spots

Since adults reach only about 5-7cm, this species can be comfortably kept in a relatively compact tank. Providing driftwood or rockwork for cover helps it feel secure and settle in well.

  2. 2Calm, Community-Friendly Temperament

Known for its peaceful nature, it rarely bothers other small fish, making it easy to add to a community tank. It also does well kept alone, where its striking pattern can be admired up close.

  3. 3Animal-Based Frozen Foods Are the Staple

It is strongly carnivorous and favors frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small live foods. It will also take prepared foods once accustomed to them, but animal-based foods help bring out its colors. Feeding small amounts several times a day works well.

  4. 4Breeding Is Achievable in Pairs

Keeping a pair of the same species lets you observe breeding behavior. Eggs are laid in cave-like spots such as holes in driftwood, and watching the male guard the eggs and fry is one of the pleasures of keeping this species.

  5. 5Beginner-Friendly Care Level

This species is considered beginner-friendly, making it approachable even for those new to fishkeeping. Consistent, basic water quality maintenance is key to keeping it healthy long-term.

  6. 6Planning for Its Lifespan

With a lifespan of around 3-5 years, this is a fish you'll be caring for over several years. Before bringing one home, make sure you have a stable spot for the tank and can commit to ongoing daily care.

  7. 7Individual Variation in Markings

The peacock-like blue spotting varies in intensity and spread from one individual to another. Comparing these subtle differences can be part of the fun when choosing your fish.
