Three Spot Gourami

The Three Spot Gourami, also known as the Blue Gourami, is a hardy labyrinth fish that can breathe air directly at the water's surface. Its long, thread-like pelvic fins act like feelers, helping it explore its surroundings, and it tolerates a wide range of water conditions, making it a solid choice for beginners. Mature males tend to be territorial, and individual temperament can vary quite a bit, so tankmates and layout are worth planning carefully. Growing to about 10 to 15 cm as an adult, it brings graceful movement to a roomy tank.

About Three Spot Gourami

A hardy, beginner-friendly labyrinth fish that breathes air at the surface. The Three Spot Gourami (Blue Gourami) has distinctive thread-like pelvic fins and grows to 10-15 cm as an adult.

7 things to know before welcoming a Three Spot Gourami

  1. 1An Air-Breathing Fish

Three Spot Gouramis have a labyrinth organ that lets them breathe air directly from the surface. Always leave an air gap at the top of the tank and keep the lid secure.

  2. 2Feeler-Like Pelvic Fins

Their long, thread-like pelvic fins act as sensory feelers for exploring their surroundings. Avoid sharp decorations and fin-nipping tankmates that could damage them.

  3. 3Males Can Be Territorial

Mature males tend to establish territories and can become aggressive toward similar-looking fish. In a cramped tank this leads to conflict, so hiding spots and sightline-breaking decor help keep the peace.

  4. 4Temperament Varies by Individual

Some individuals are calm while others are feistier, and personality can vary noticeably from fish to fish. Watch closely after introducing tankmates and adjust the setup if needed.

  5. 5Grows to 10-15 cm

This gourami reaches roughly 10 to 15 cm as an adult, so plan for that eventual size when choosing a tank. Don't pick an enclosure based on its small size at purchase.

  6. 6Hardy and Adaptable

As a labyrinth fish, it tolerates a wide range of water conditions and is generally quite hardy. Even so, sudden changes are stressful, so make water changes gradual.

  7. 7Secure Lid Is a Must

Because it regularly rises to the surface to breathe, it can jump out of the tank if startled. Use a well-fitted lid or cover to close any gaps and prevent escapes.
