Mahachai fighter

Betta mahachaiensis is a wild betta from the brackish wetlands of central Thailand. It is regarded as the only betta that lives solely in brackish water, and it builds bubble nests in water that collects at the base of nipa palm fronds. Males have a dark body lined with glittering blue-green scales, a quietly striking look. Standard length reaches 4.4 cm at most, and in captivity it can be kept in slightly hard fresh water or very weakly brackish water. It suits intermediate keepers. Lifespan data is scarce, and no firm figure is known. If you enjoy fine-tuning water conditions, this is a distinctive little betta.

Mahachai fighter key facts

Care level
Intermediate
Lifespan
Few reliable data
Size
Up to 4.4 cm SL (FishBase)
Temperature
22〜28℃
Diet
Carnivore (small frozen and live foods, small insects)
Water Temperature & Quality
22-28°C, pH 7.0-8.5, 5-20 dGH (Seriously Fish); habitat pH 6.9-7.8 (FishBase). Keep in moderately hard fresh water or slightly brackish water.
Aquarium
Cover the surface with tall or floating plants and add driftwood and clay pots for shelter, with a gentle sponge filter. It jumps and needs humid air above the water, so keep a gap under a tight lid.
Tank Mates & Compatibility
Not for typical community tanks; keep alone or with very peaceful small fish. With enough cover more than one male can be kept, but separate pairs for breeding.
Diet & Feeding
Feed mainly frozen or live Daphnia, Artemia and bloodworm; small insects such as fruit flies are also suitable. Prone to obesity, so do not overfeed.
Breeding & Egg-laying
A bubble-nester: the male builds a nest in a tube or under a leaf and tends eggs and larvae, which hatch in 24-48 hours. Keep the lid closed so the air above stays warm and humid.
Health & Cautions
Populations differ slightly, for example in tail shape, so do not cross fish from different localities; check locality data when buying.

About Mahachai fighter

Betta mahachaiensis is a wild betta from the brackish waters of central Thailand, with a standard length of up to 4.4 cm. Here is what intermediate keepers should know before bringing one home.

7 things to know before welcoming a Mahachai fighter

  1. 1Slightly hard fresh water or weak brackish water

In the wild it is considered to live only in brackish water, but in captivity it can be kept in slightly hard fresh water or very weakly brackish water, at around 22–28°C and pH 7.0–8.5. If you go brackish, use a marine salt mix and measure salinity so it stays steady. Starting with water that matches what the fish was raised in is the safest approach.

  2. 2Match water conditions on water changes

Adjust the temperature and water chemistry of new water before adding it to the tank. If you keep it in brackish water, remember that salt stays behind when water evaporates, so top up with dechlorinated fresh water and keep an eye on how salinity drifts.

  3. 3Small fish, stable tank

Standard length (measured without the tail fin) reaches 4.4 cm at most, so a very large tank is not required. However, small volumes shift in salinity and water quality quickly, so choose a setup where evaporation and dirt are easy to spot. Bettas breathe air at the surface, so keep a lid on the tank but leave an air gap beneath it.

  4. 4Bubble nests and hiding spots

In the wild it builds bubble nests in puddles at the base of nipa palms. In the tank, driftwood or roots for cover plus salt-tolerant floating plants should help it settle and may encourage nest building. A strong current can break up bubble nests, so keep the filter flow gentle.

  5. 5Be careful with tank mates

Bettas can fight, especially males of the same species, so keeping several males together is best avoided. If you try other fish, check that they tolerate the same salinity and don't chase the betta, and provide plenty of hiding places while you watch closely.

  6. 6Small, easy-to-eat foods

Choose small, easy-to-eat foods such as brine shrimp, frozen bloodworms, or fine pellets. Some fish are picky right after arrival, so ask the seller what it has been eating and start with the same food. Uneaten food fouls the water, so feed small amounts and remove leftovers.

  7. 7Arrival and health checks

Before ordering, ask the seller about the fish's origin (captive-bred or wild-collected), the salinity of its rearing water, and what it is being fed. On arrival, mix the bag water with tank water little by little so the fish can adjust to the salinity and water quality before you release it. If it seems unwell, review salinity, temperature, and water quality first, and ask someone experienced before using any medication, since its use can change in salted water.

Frequently asked questions about Mahachai fighter

Q.Can I keep it in a fresh water tank?
A.Although it is considered to live only in brackish water in the wild, in captivity it can be kept in slightly hard fresh water or very weakly brackish water. Check the water the fish was raised in and match it when you set up.
Q.Is it suitable for beginners?
A.Its difficulty is rated for intermediate keepers. It calls for salinity management and careful feeding, and information is limited, so prior experience with bettas or marine fish will help.
Q.How large does it get?
A.Standard length reaches 4.4 cm at most (FishBase). Standard length excludes the tail fin, so the total length including fins is longer than that.
Q.How long does it live?
A.Lifespan data is scarce, so there is no reliable figure. Keeping salinity and temperature stable and avoiding stress is the best basis for keeping it long term.
Q.What salt should I use for brackish water?
A.A marine aquarium salt mix is commonly used to adjust salinity. Check the current rearing water and ask the seller which product and strength they use before you set up.
