Its dark brown facial disc is set off by striking white "eyebrows" and deep reddish-brown eyes, while a chocolate-brown back and a whitish underside marked with rufous barring give it a subdued, elegant look. Its namesake feature is the reddish-brown band across the upper chest. At 44-48 cm in total length, it is a fairly large owl, generally considered quiet and independent in temperament.
