Select bird species and number of birds to calculate minimum cage dimensions, recommended accessories, and daily out-of-cage time.
A good rule of thumb is to choose a cage at least twice as wide as the bird's full wingspan. For small birds like budgies and finches, a minimum width of 45 cm is recommended; for medium birds like cockatiels, at least 60 cm. When housing multiple birds, go one size larger to reduce territorial conflicts.
Also consider material, bar spacing, and door design. Look for smooth edges to prevent feather or claw snags, and a pull-out bottom tray for easy cleaning.
