Black Ruby Barb

The Black Ruby Barb is a small barb species found only in the forest streams of Sri Lanka. Day to day, it wears an understated pale yellow body with dark vertical bars, but breeding males transform dramatically, flushing a purplish-red on the head while the rear half of the body deepens to black. Naturally peaceful and gregarious, this fish shows its best colors and most relaxed behavior when kept in a group with others of similar size. Hardy and adaptable, it's a forgiving choice for beginner aquarists who follow basic care guidelines.

About Black Ruby Barb

A guide to the Black Ruby Barb, a small Sri Lankan endemic barb — its appearance, temperament, breeding colors, and what to know before bringing one home.

7 things to know before welcoming a Black Ruby Barb

  1. 1Endemic to Sri Lanka

The Black Ruby Barb is found only in the forest streams of Sri Lanka, nowhere else in the wild. The IUCN lists it as Vulnerable, reflecting its naturally restricted range. Adding driftwood and plants that echo a stream-like layout helps bring out its natural behavior.

  2. 2Breeding Colors in Males

During the breeding season, males develop a striking purplish-red head with a black rear half. This color change is one of the species' signature highlights. Outside of breeding condition, both sexes wear a calmer pale yellow body marked with dark vertical bars.

  3. 3Best Kept in a Group

This peaceful, schooling fish does best when kept with several of its own kind rather than alone or in a small pair. Keeping too few can lead to restless or unsettled behavior. A proper group brings out its calmest temperament and best coloration.

  4. 4Stays Compact as an Adult

Adults reach a maximum size of about 6.7 cm, making them a compact addition to a planted setup. Their modest size makes it easier to keep a full group without overwhelming the aquascape. This also simplifies planning tankmates of a similar scale.

  5. 5Peaceful Tankmate Choices

Black Ruby Barbs are generally peaceful and can be combined with other calm fish of similar size. Keeping too small a group, however, can lead to minor squabbling within the school. Take care when considering long-finned tankmates, and observe compatibility closely.

  6. 6Beginner-Friendly Care

This species is classified as suitable for beginners, staying manageable as long as sudden shifts in water quality are avoided. Consistent basic maintenance, such as regular water changes, is the key to keeping them healthy over the long term.

  7. 7Preparing Before You Bring One Home

Before bringing your fish home, set up a layout with plants and driftwood so it has places to settle in comfortably. Acclimate it slowly to your tank's water conditions rather than rushing the process. It also helps to plan your group size and tankmates in advance.
