The Saulosi Cichlid (Pseudotropheus saulosi) is a small mbuna found only around Taiwan Reef in Lake Malawi. Its biggest draw is the striking difference between sexes: females stay bright yellow their entire lives, while males develop a blue body with bold black bars as they mature. Watching yellow and blue individuals share the same tank gives this species a visual appeal few other cichlids can match. Like other rock-dwelling mbuna, Saulosi are territorial and energetic swimmers. Reaching about 8 to 9 cm as adults, they stay compact enough to anchor a Malawi cichlid community tank without dominating the space. They call for some intermediate-level know-how, but watching the males color up is one of the most rewarding transformations in the hobby.

- Care level
- Intermediate
- Lifespan
- 5-8 years
- Size
- 8-9cm
- Temperature
- 23〜27℃
- Diet
- Spirulina-based prepared foods, frozen foods
- Tank
- Build plenty of territories and caves from rock. It comes from a high-current rocky zone, so provide reasonable flow.
- Water Temperature & Quality
- 23-27C. Maintain the hard alkaline water typical for Lake Malawi mbuna.
- Tank Mates
- Males resemble one another and therefore fight. One male with several females is the easiest arrangement.
- Diet & Feeding
- As with other algae-grazing mbuna, base the diet on vegetable matter such as spirulina.
- Breeding & Spawning
- A mouthbrooder. The female holds the brood for 13 to 18 days until the fry can swim.
- Health & Notes
- The wild population is assessed as Critically Endangered, so maintaining captive-bred stock matters for this species.
About Saulosi Cichlid
The Saulosi Cichlid is a small Lake Malawi mbuna found only at Taiwan Reef. Females stay yellow while males turn blue with black bars at maturity; adults reach 8-9 cm and suit intermediate-level keepers.
7 things to know before welcoming a Saulosi Cichlid
1Striking Sexual Dimorphism
Females remain yellow throughout their lives, while males gradually develop a blue body with black bars as they mature. Keeping both sexes together lets you enjoy two very different color patterns in one tank.
2Territorial Behavior
As a rock-dwelling mbuna, Saulosi show clear territorial instincts, and males in particular can spar with one another. Providing plenty of rockwork and hiding spots helps reduce tension in the tank.
3Best Kept in Groups
Saulosi tend to do well when kept as one male with several females rather than in pairs. This ratio helps spread out the male's attention and reduces stress on any single female.
4Prefers Alkaline Water
Being native to Lake Malawi, Saulosi thrive in slightly alkaline, harder water conditions. Avoid sudden pH swings during water changes and aim to keep the environment stable.
5Algae-Leaning Diet
In the wild, Saulosi graze mainly on algae growing on rocks, giving them a plant-leaning diet. Basing their feeding on herbivore-oriented formulated food helps avoid digestive issues.
6Choosing Tankmates
Because of their feisty temperament, slow-moving or very placid small fish are best avoided as tankmates. Pairing them with other Lake Malawi cichlids is the general approach.
7Tank Setup Before Arrival
Arrange plenty of rocks to break sightlines and divide territories before bringing Saulosi home; this reduces conflict after introduction. Make sure water parameters and temperature are stable before adding new fish.
Frequently asked questions about Saulosi Cichlid
- Q.How can I tell males and females apart?
- A.Females keep their yellow coloring for life, while males develop a blue body with black bars as they grow. The difference is hard to spot in juveniles but becomes clear as they mature.
- Q.Can it be kept with other cichlids?
- A.Saulosi generally pair well with other Lake Malawi cichlids, but their feisty temperament makes them a poor match for calmer species. Tank size and the number of hiding spots also affect compatibility.
- Q.How many should be kept together?
- A.A setup of one male with several females tends to work best. Keeping multiple males together often leads to territorial disputes, so caution is needed.
- Q.How much tank space does it need?
- A.Adults stay compact at about 8-9 cm, but their territorial nature calls for a tank roomy enough to fit multiple rock formations as hiding spots. Allow extra space if keeping them in a group.
- Q.Why do some males not show much color change?
- A.The pace of coloring varies between individuals and can be influenced by water conditions, environment, and social ranking within the group. Patience and a stable environment usually help the process along.
