Green Shrimp

Green Shrimp

Green Shrimp are small freshwater shrimp prized for their vivid green coloring. Belonging to the genus Caridina in the Atyidae family, they spend much of their time grazing biofilm and algae off glass, driftwood, and plant surfaces, making them a popular "cleanup crew" addition to a tank. They're peaceful by nature and rarely bother other tankmates, which is part of their appeal in community aquariums. Coloration varies between individuals, and shrimp with hues other than green are sometimes sold under the same name. Because they can be sensitive to shifts in water quality, they're generally considered an intermediate-level species best introduced to a tank that has already fully cycled and stabilized.

Green Shrimp key facts

Care level
Intermediate
Lifespan
2-3 years
Diet
Biofilm, algae and prepared shrimp foods
Tank
It can be kept in a small tank, though less water means larger swings in chemistry. Use soil substrate, driftwood and mosses to give surfaces for biofilm and places to hide, and sponge over filter intakes so the young are not drawn in.
Water Temperature & Quality
Caridina is a genus of tropical and subtropical fresh waters, and the basic approach is to avoid sudden changes and to renew water in small amounts.
Tank Mates
Peaceful and not aggressive. It is small enough to be eaten, so keep it from shrimp-eating fish. Hybridisation between related Caridina species is documented, so keep it away from congeners if the colour is to be maintained.
Diet & Feeding
Caridina species combine filter feeding with omnivorous scavenging. In the aquarium it grazes biofilm and algae from stones and wood, and a sinking shrimp food can be given in small amounts, with leftovers removed.
Breeding & Spawning
The egg-carrying period and larval development of this species are not known. As in Caridina generally, the female carries and tends the eggs on her pleopods.
Health & Notes
It is soft and defenceless just after moulting, so provide plenty of cover, and never use copper-based fish medications, which are toxic to shrimp. Be aware that buying by trade name may bring in stock whose identification is unconfirmed.

About Green Shrimp

An introduction to Green Shrimp, a small freshwater shrimp known for its green coloring, covering its temperament, algae-grazing habits, care difficulty, and key water-quality points to know before bringing one home.

7 things to know before welcoming a Green Shrimp

  1. 1Sensitive to Water Changes

Green Shrimp are sensitive to sudden shifts in water chemistry, and rapid changes in pH or temperature can quickly stress them. It's best to introduce them to a tank that has already cycled and stabilized, rather than a brand-new setup.

  2. 2Natural Algae Grazers

They spend much of their time scraping biofilm and algae off glass, driftwood, and plant leaves. This grazing behavior makes them useful helpers for keeping a tank looking clean.

  3. 3Peaceful, Community-Friendly

Green Shrimp are peaceful and rarely act aggressively toward other fish or shrimp. However, because of their small size, they can become prey if kept with larger, predatory fish.

  4. 4Coloration Varies by Individual

While green is the most common coloring for this shrimp, shade and intensity vary between individuals, and shrimp with other hues are sometimes sold under the same name. Comparing coloring and patterns is part of the fun of choosing one.

  5. 5Provide Hiding Spots

When molting, their shell is soft and they become vulnerable, so they prefer layouts with places to hide. Adding plants, driftwood, or shelters gives them a sense of security.

  6. 6Watch Out for Copper-Based Medications

Shrimp are sensitive to copper and similar compounds found in some fish medications, and can be affected even at labeled dosages. Always check whether a treatment is shrimp-safe before dosing the tank.

  7. 7Acclimate Slowly

Because they're sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters, it's important to take your time acclimating new arrivals, such as with a slow drip method. Gradual acclimation over an extended period helps reduce stress.

Frequently asked questions about Green Shrimp

Q.Can Green Shrimp live with other fish?
A.Yes, thanks to their peaceful temperament they generally get along with many small fish. That said, their small size means they can be eaten if kept with larger or more predatory species, so tankmate choice matters.
Q.Do they really help keep the tank clean?
A.They do graze on biofilm and algae on glass, driftwood, and plants, which can help control buildup. That said, they won't eliminate all algae on their own, so regular tank maintenance is still needed.
Q.Could I receive a shrimp that isn't green?
A.Yes, that can happen. Coloration varies between individuals, and shrimp with hues other than green are sometimes sold under the Green Shrimp name. It's worth keeping in mind that color can differ from one individual to the next.
Q.Why is this species rated intermediate difficulty?
A.They're sensitive to sudden shifts in water quality, pH, and temperature, which can quickly stress them. For that reason, it's recommended to start them only in a tank that has already cycled and stabilized.
Q.Do I need to feed them anything besides what's in the tank?
A.They spend much of their time grazing on algae and biofilm, but that alone may not provide complete nutrition. Supplementing with a shrimp-specific food can help support their health.
