Biewer Terrier

The Biewer Terrier is a toy breed best known for its long, straight, silky coat in a striking tricolor pattern of white, black (or blue), and gold. Developed in Germany by Yorkshire Terrier breeders Mr. and Mrs. Biewer, this relatively young breed gained official recognition from the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 2021. Standing about 18–28cm tall and weighing 1.8–3.6kg, Biewer Terriers are small enough for comfortable indoor living. They are intelligent, form deep attachments to their families, and have a playful, childlike streak. While generally considered beginner-friendly, their flowing coat calls for regular, consistent grooming.

About Biewer Terrier

Biewer Terriers are tricolor toy dogs known for their long, silky, straight coats and affectionate personalities. With a lifespan of around 16 years, they are generally considered a good choice for first-time owners.

7 things to know before welcoming a Biewer Terrier

  1. 1Daily Coat Care

The long, silky, straight coat is beautiful but prone to tangles and matting without daily brushing. Regular bathing and trimming are also needed to keep the coat manageable.

  2. 2Fragile, Toy-Sized Body

Weighing only around 1.8–3.6kg, Biewer Terriers are delicate and can be injured by falls from heights or rough handling. Care is needed when picking them up or letting them play with young children.

  3. 3Affectionate Companion

Biewer Terriers are deeply affectionate and tend to want to be close to their people at all times. They do best in households that can offer plenty of companionship rather than long hours alone.

  4. 4Dental Care Matters

Like many small breeds, Biewer Terriers can be prone to tartar buildup and dental disease. Regular tooth brushing and periodic dental checkups help keep their teeth healthy.

  5. 5Moderate Exercise Needs

Biewer Terriers don't require intense exercise — short walks and indoor play are usually enough. Still, daily interaction and enrichment toys help keep them mentally stimulated.

  6. 6Sensitive to Temperature

Due to their small size, Biewer Terriers can be sensitive to extreme heat and cold. They should live primarily indoors, with temperature managed appropriately for the season.

  7. 7Prepare Your Home First

Because of their tiny size, puppy-proofing your home against small hazards, gaps, and fall risks is important before bringing one home. Confirm the puppy's health status with a trustworthy breeder beforehand.

Frequently asked questions about Biewer Terrier

Q.What's the difference between a Biewer Terrier and a Yorkshire Terrier?
A.The Biewer Terrier was developed from Yorkshire Terriers bred by Mr. and Mrs. Biewer, and is distinguished by its tricolor coat that includes white. Yorkshire Terriers, by contrast, are typically tan and blue without white. The two breeds share close ancestry but differ in coat color and origin.
Q.Do Biewer Terriers shed a lot?
A.Biewer Terrier coats are similar in texture to human hair and are generally considered lower-shedding than many other breeds. That said, they aren't hairless, so daily brushing is still needed to prevent matting.
Q.Is this breed suitable for first-time dog owners?
A.Biewer Terriers are generally considered beginner-friendly: they are intelligent, attached to their families, and need only modest exercise. Still, their long coat and small size call for consistent daily care, and house-training can take some time.
Q.How well do they handle being left alone?
A.Because they're affectionate and enjoy being with their family, Biewer Terriers aren't well suited to being left alone for long stretches. If they must be alone, keep it brief and ensure a safe environment.
Q.What is the typical lifespan of a Biewer Terrier?
A.Biewer Terriers typically live around 16 years, making them relatively long-lived among toy breeds. Regular dental care and proper weight management can help support a long, healthy life.
