The Biewer Terrier is a toy breed believed to have been started around 1984 by German Yorkshire Terrier breeders Mr and Mrs Biewer, who spent several years fixing its type. It was introduced to the United States in 2003 and recognised by the UKC in 2016 and by the AKC (Toy Group) in 2021; the FCI does not recognise it. Its defining feature is colour: black or blue and white, with tan or gold only on the head and around the anus. The chest, neck and chin, belly, legs and tail tip are white, and there must be some black or blue on the topline. Patches of brown or tan on the body or legs are an eliminating fault under the UKC standard. The coat is long, straight and silky with no undercoat, parting down the middle, and the headfall is tied up in a single topknot. It is intelligent, devoted to its family and has a playful, child-like attitude. The US breed club reports few known health problems but notes dental issues such as retained baby teeth and tartar and a sensitive digestive system, and asks breeders for eye exams, DNA tests for PRA and primary lens luxation, and patella evaluations. In Japan a small number of breeders produce it, and buyers look for it as a breed distinct from the Yorkshire Terrier.
