Kennel Cough (Infectious Tracheobronchitis)

About this condition

A highly contagious respiratory disease caused by multiple pathogens infecting the airways. Group outbreaks commonly occur in dog parks and boarding facilities, and the condition can become severe in puppies and elderly dogs.

Common symptoms

• Dry, persistent cough
• Retching or gagging motion after coughing
• Runny nose or nasal discharge
• Decreased appetite
• Lethargy

Common causes

• Bacterial infection such as Bordetella bronchiseptica
• Viral infection such as canine parainfluenza virus
• Mixed infection with multiple pathogens
• Close contact with infected dogs at dog parks or kennels
• Weakened immune system

Prevention (husbandry & daily care)

Vaccination (combination or intranasal vaccines) is effective for prevention. Confirm your dog's vaccination status before using dog parks or boarding facilities, and avoid contact with visibly unwell dogs. Maintaining hygiene practices such as hand washing after handling other dogs is also important.

What treatment does a vet provide?

A veterinarian will assess the infection through auscultation and examination of nasal or throat discharge. Care is provided based on the severity of symptoms, and additional testing may be performed if the condition is severe or secondary infection is suspected. It is advisable to call ahead before visiting the clinic to prevent spreading infection to other dogs.
