About this condition
Inflammation of the outer ear canal caused by bacteria, fungi, ear mites, or allergies. It is more common in floppy-eared breeds and dogs that swim, and tends to recur.
Common symptoms
- Scratching at the ears
- Head shaking
- Foul odor from the ears
- Increased ear discharge
- Redness and swelling of the ears
Common causes
- Bacterial or fungal infection
- Ear mites
- Allergies
- Moisture (common in floppy-eared breeds)
Prevention (husbandry & daily care)
Regular ear cleaning, dry ears after bathing, extra care for floppy-eared breeds.
