About this condition
A serious disease caused by heartworm larvae transmitted by mosquitoes that settle in the pulmonary artery and heart. Regular preventive medication can prevent it, but treatment after infection carries significant risk.
Common symptoms
- Coughing
- Reluctance to exercise
- Difficulty breathing
- Abdominal distention
- Sudden death in severe cases

- Missed doses of preventive medication
Prevention (husbandry & daily care)
Monthly heartworm preventive medication (May-December in Japan), regular blood testing.
