Djungarian Hamster (Pudding)

The Pudding Djungarian hamster is a coat color of the Djungarian hamster, with a body that turns a light beige to pale yellowish-tan, reminiscent of a custard pudding. The dorsal stripe is faint, which gives it a soft, uniform look. Adults are palm-sized, and basic care is the same as for a normal Djungarian. It is rated as beginner-friendly: with a cage, a wheel, and sand for bathing, even first-time hamster keepers can care for one. Temperament and coat tone vary by individual.

Djungarian Hamster (Pudding) key facts

Care level
Beginner-friendly
Lifespan
About 1–3 years in captivity, sometimes longer
Size
Head and body 7–9cm, tail 0.5–1.5cm; 19–45g (males), 19–36g (females)
Temperature
18〜26℃
Humidity
40〜60%
Diet
Omnivore; hamster pellets as the staple, with small amounts of vegetables and seeds
Identification
Light beige to pale tan all over, with a faint stripe. Compare it with normal (dark grey-brown with a black stripe), sapphire (bluish grey) and pearl white (fur white from the root).
Breeding
Some guides say mandarin pups inheriting two copies of the gene die before birth. Whether pudding is the same gene is unconfirmed, but avoid pairing two puddings and research colour combinations first.
Notes
Red eyes, an all-black coat or white patches (pied) suggest a Campbell's hamster or a hybrid. Hybrids often have health problems and are not suitable for breeding. Japanese sources also say puddings tend to put on weight, so weigh regularly.
Cage
Care is the same as for a normal-coloured Djungarian: bedding at least 10cm deep, a nest box, a solid-surface wheel and a sand bath.
Temperature
Aim for 18–26°C and 40–60% humidity. Below 10°C or above 30°C is life-threatening, so the room needs air conditioning most of the year.
Temperament
There is no evidence that colour affects temperament. Djungarians tame easily but vary a lot, and incompatible animals fight badly, so keep them singly.

About Djungarian Hamster (Pudding)

Meet the Pudding Djungarian hamster: a beginner-friendly hamster with a light beige coat. Coat traits and care tips before you bring one home.

7 things to know before welcoming a Djungarian Hamster (Pudding)

  1. 1Pudding-Colored Coat

The whole body is a light beige to pale yellowish-tan, and the dorsal stripe is faint. It has been suggested that yellow-toned coats may trace back to crossing with Campbell's hamsters. Shade and evenness vary by individual, so it helps to check photos of the animal and its parents.

  2. 2Keep Them Alone

Djungarian hamsters can be territorial, and housing them together may lead to fights. It is safest to give each hamster its own cage, complete with its own wheel and hideout. Avoid sharing a cage, as injuries can happen.

  3. 3Escape-Proof Housing

Even adults are only palm-sized, so a cage with wide bar spacing may let them squeeze out. Choose a tank-style or fine-barred cage and secure the lid firmly. A deep layer of bedding lets them burrow, which often helps them settle in.

  4. 4Wheel and Night Play

They tend to be most active in the evening and at night, so a wheel is an important outlet. Pick one large enough that the back stays straight, with a surface where small feet won't catch. Let them rest quietly during the day rather than waking them.

  5. 5Sand Baths and Climate

A dish of bathing sand helps them keep their coat tidy. They tend to dislike heat and stuffiness, so keep the cage out of direct sunlight in a well-ventilated room. Avoid spots with large temperature swings as well.

  6. 6Diet and Daily Checks

Base the diet on hamster pellets or a dedicated hamster food, and keep treats such as sunflower seeds or fruit to small amounts. Provide fresh water at all times and change it daily. Watch appetite, movement, coat condition, and droppings, and consult a veterinarian who treats small animals if anything seems off.

  7. 7Settling In After Arrival

For the first few days after arrival, leave the cage undisturbed so your hamster can adjust to its new surroundings. Once it seems comfortable, offer treats from your hand so it gradually learns to approach you. Hamsters are small and quick, so handle them close to the floor to guard against falls.

Frequently asked questions about Djungarian Hamster (Pudding)

Q.Is it suitable for first-time owners?
A.Its care difficulty is rated as beginner-friendly. If you prepare the basics, such as a cage, wheel, bathing sand, and pellets, and observe it daily, it is a manageable choice for first-time owners.
Q.How long does it live?
A.We could not find lifespan data specific to the Pudding coat color. Because the hamster is so small, daily observation and prompt attention to any change in condition matter.
Q.How big does an adult get?
A.Adults are small, palm-sized hamsters. We could not find size data specific to this coat color. Some Japanese care guides note that Puddings are said to put on weight easily, so weigh yours regularly. Being so small, they need extra care to prevent escapes and falls.
Q.Can I keep it with other hamsters?
A.Because they can be territorial, we recommend housing each hamster in a separate cage. Sharing a cage risks fights and injuries.
Q.Is the Pudding a Campbell's cross?
A.It has been suggested that yellow-toned coats may come from crossing with Campbell's hamsters, but this remains only a possibility. If you are curious about lineage or the parents, ask the breeder before bringing one home.
