Identification

Standard ears stand on top of the head; dumbo ears open low and round beside the cheeks. Ear type is independent of colour and coat, so any variety can be dumbo.

Recessive: dumbo × dumbo gives all dumbos; dumbo × standard gives standard-eared carriers; two carriers give about one dumbo in four.

Cage

Care is the same as for any fancy rat: a tall cage with a nest box and bedding, plus time out of the cage.

Temperament

Fancy rats are tame and learn to seek out their owners. There is no evidence that ear type affects temperament.

Health

Chronic respiratory disease caused by Mycoplasma is common in pet rats. See a vet early if you notice sneezing, snuffling or red discharge around the eyes or nose.
