Yellow Clown Goby

The Yellow Clown Goby is a tiny, vividly yellow goby that tops out at around 3.5 cm as an adult. In the wild it lives among the branches of Acropora corals, and in the aquarium it's often seen perched right on top of its coral home. It's considered hardy and beginner-friendly, making it a great fit for small tanks. One thing to keep in mind is that when it spawns on coral, it can cause some localized tissue recession at the site. Despite its small size, its bright color makes it a real standout in any reef tank.

About Yellow Clown Goby

The Yellow Clown Goby is a tiny, vivid-yellow reef fish reaching about 3.5 cm. Hardy and beginner-friendly, it's often seen perched on Acropora corals in the aquarium.

7 things to know before welcoming a Yellow Clown Goby

  1. 1Great for Small Tanks

Topping out at around 3.5 cm, the Yellow Clown Goby is a hardy species considered suitable for beginners. Its tiny size means it fits comfortably even in space-limited tanks.

  2. 2Loves Acropora Corals

In the wild, this goby makes its home among the branches of Acropora corals, and in aquariums it's often spotted perched right on top of them. It pairs naturally with a coral-dominated reef tank and adds a lively accent to the layout.

  3. 3Spawning May Affect Coral

This species sometimes spawns directly on coral tissue, which can cause a small amount of localized tissue recession where the eggs are laid. It's a normal part of its behavior, so there's no need to be alarmed if you notice a small change on the colony.

  4. 4Vivid Yellow Coloring

Its whole body is a bright, saturated yellow that stands out beautifully against coral. It's a great pick for anyone wanting a splash of color in a reef tank.

  5. 5Choose Tankmates Carefully

Because of its small size, it's best kept with calm, similarly-sized tankmates rather than large or aggressive fish. Individuals can become territorial toward one another, so if keeping more than one, provide enough space and hiding spots.

  6. 6Watch Feeding Closely

Since it tends to stay on or near its coral perch, keep an eye out to make sure it isn't outcompeted for food by other fish and is actually eating. Target-feeding with tweezers can help you confirm it's getting enough.

  7. 7Provide a Coral Perch

Having a branching coral to perch on helps this goby feel secure and display its natural behavior. Before bringing one home, make sure your tank has a suitable branching coral or similar structure for it to rest on.

Frequently asked questions about Yellow Clown Goby

Q.Is it suitable for beginners?
A.Yes, the Yellow Clown Goby is generally considered hardy and beginner-friendly. That said, being a small species, you'll still want to choose tankmates carefully and make sure it's getting enough food.
Q.How big does it get?
A.It stays quite small, reaching a maximum of about 3.5 cm as an adult. This compact size makes it manageable even in smaller tanks.
Q.Can it damage the coral it lives on?
A.It sometimes lays eggs directly on coral, which can cause a small amount of localized tissue recession at the spawning site. This is a natural part of its behavior rather than a sign of a problem.
Q.Can it be kept with other fish?
A.Because it's so small, it's best paired with calm tankmates rather than large or aggressive fish. It can also be territorial toward its own kind, so give it enough space and hiding spots if keeping more than one.
Q.What should I feed it?
A.Small portions of prepared or frozen foods sized for its tiny mouth work well. Since it spends much of its time perched on coral, watch closely to confirm it's actually getting fed rather than missing out to faster tankmates.
