Lined Seahorse

The Lined Seahorse is a large seahorse species native to the Atlantic coast of North America. Its upright, hovering swimming style and the way it anchors itself to seagrass or aquarium decor with its prehensile tail give it a distinctly charming presence. Most specimens available today are captive-bred and already trained onto frozen mysis shrimp, making feeding more manageable than with wild-caught seahorses. That said, it can grow to a body height of up to 17.8 cm and typically lives 1 to 4 years, so it needs a tall species-only tank and multiple feedings a day, making it best suited to experienced marine aquarists.

About Lined Seahorse

The Lined Seahorse is a large North American seahorse known for its upright swimming style. It needs a tall species-only tank and frequent feeding, making it best suited for experienced keepers. Grows to 17.8 cm, lives 1-4 years.

7 things to know before welcoming a Lined Seahorse

  1. 1A Tall, Species-Only Tank

Seahorses aren't strong swimmers, so housing them with other fish often leads to lost meals or added stress. Since they can reach a body height of up to 17.8 cm, set up a dedicated tank with plenty of vertical space.

  2. 2Feeding on Frozen Mysis

Most seahorses sold today are captive-bred and already trained to eat frozen mysis shrimp. They eat only small amounts at a time, though, so plan on feeding several times a day.

  3. 3Provide Places to Hold On

Lined Seahorses like to anchor their prehensile tail to macroalgae, live rock, or artificial branches and stay put. Plenty of holdfasts in the tank help them feel secure.

  4. 4Keep Water Flow Gentle

Being weak swimmers, seahorses tire quickly in strong currents. Keep filtration adequate but arrange the flow so the area where they rest stays calm.

  5. 5A Lifespan of 1 to 4 Years

The Lined Seahorse typically lives 1 to 4 years. Good water quality, consistent feeding, and a low-stress environment are key to helping it live a full life.

  6. 6Rated for Experienced Keepers

Frequent feeding and careful tank management make this a species rated for advanced hobbyists. It's best to gain some marine fishkeeping experience before bringing one home.

  7. 7Set Up the Tank in Advance

Since they can grow to a body height of 17.8 cm, set up a tall species-only tank and a feeding routine before bringing one home. Sudden changes to their environment can be stressful for them.

Frequently asked questions about Lined Seahorse

Q.Can it live with other fish?
A.Since seahorses aren't strong swimmers and can easily lose out on food, a species-only tank is generally recommended. If you do keep tankmates, choose only slow, gentle species.
Q.Does it need frozen mysis specifically?
A.Most seahorses available today are already trained onto frozen mysis shrimp, though individual preferences can vary. Feed small amounts several times a day.
Q.Is this a good choice for beginners?
A.The Lined Seahorse is rated as an advanced-level species. Because tank setup and feeding require regular attention, it's best suited to keepers with some marine fishkeeping experience already.
Q.How large does it grow?
A.Adults reach a body height of up to about 17.8 cm. As a large seahorse species, it needs a tank with enough vertical space.
Q.How long does it live?
