Soft corals belong to the phylum Cnidaria and are found across tropical and subtropical reef systems worldwide. Unlike stony corals, they lack a rigid calcium carbonate skeleton and instead rely on microscopic calcite structures called spicules embedded in thick, fleshy tissue. The group encompasses a remarkable variety of forms — from the fan-like plumes of Sinularia to the mushroom-shaped caps of Sarcophyton and the flowing tentacles of Euphyllia. Through symbiotic zooxanthellae living within their tissues, soft corals harvest energy from light, allowing them to thrive under moderate illumination that would leave many hard corals underperforming. Gentle, indirect water movement is all they need to extend their polyps and feed.
