Pink Sapphire Medaka

Pink Sapphire Medaka has a soft, translucent pink body with semi-transparent scales and blue glitter across the entire back. The pink-and-blue combination looks like a gemstone, and that is the heart of its appeal. It was created in 2022 by 和田敏拓, so it is a fairly new variety. It is a small medaka, and with the calm temperament typical of medaka it is considered beginner-friendly. It can be kept in a tank or a container, and looking down from above shows off the blue sheen on the back.

Pink Sapphire Medaka key facts

Care level
Beginner-friendly
Lifespan
2-3 years
Size
About 3-4 cm (wild medaka reach up to 4 cm SL: FishBase)
Diet
Omnivore (floating prepared foods, live foods such as daphnia)
Container & Tank
The blue glitter on the back is clearest from above; a dark container highlights the pink-and-blue contrast.
Breeding
Deeper pink suppresses blue glitter; choose pale-pink breeders with dense blue lamé.
Tank Mates & Compatibility
Peaceful and fine with other medaka of similar size. To keep the variety's traits, do not let it breed with other varieties in the same container.
Diet & Feeding
Give floating food that is eaten within 3-5 minutes: at least twice a day in summer, once a day in spring and autumn, and little or none outdoors in winter.
Cautions
Never release ornamental medaka into rivers, ponds or paddies; hybridisation causes genetic pollution of wild medaka.

About Pink Sapphire Medaka

Pink Sapphire Medaka is a beginner-friendly medaka with translucent pale pink scales and blue glitter across the back, created in 2022. A small, beginner-friendly medaka. Learn what to know before bringing one home.

7 things to know before welcoming a Pink Sapphire Medaka

  1. 1Pale pink with blue glitter

This variety is known for its translucent, pale pink body, semi-transparent scales, and blue glitter covering the back. The pink and blue together look like a gemstone, which is what sets it apart. How the colors appear changes with the light and the viewing angle, so try looking at it from both above and the side.

  2. 2Small and beginner-friendly

Adults are small, and the difficulty level is rated as beginner-friendly. Choose the number of fish to suit the size of your container. Starting with just a few and adding more once the water is stable helps you avoid problems.

  3. 3Temperament and tankmates

Like other medaka, this variety is gentle, so consider keeping it with other medaka or with mild fish of a similar size. It is safer to keep it apart from anything small enough to be swallowed and from pushy fish that chase others.

  4. 4Bringing out the colors

To enjoy the pale pink and blue glitter, pay attention to how the fish looks when viewed from above. The background, the color of the bottom, and the lighting all change the impression, so adjust them while checking how the fish actually looks.

  5. 5Feeding and water changes

Feed fine granules that suit their small mouths, and give only what they can finish. Leftover food fouls the water, so remove it promptly. Change the water in small amounts to avoid sudden shifts in water quality.

  6. 6Watching for health changes

At each feeding, take a look at how the fish swims and at the condition of its body surface and fins. If it seems listless or you notice something unusual, such as white spots, keep it apart from the others while you watch it. Consult someone experienced with fish, or the breeder, if needed.

  7. 7Preparing to bring one home

Do not put the fish straight into the tank when it arrives. Float the bag in the water to match temperatures, then add your tank water a little at a time to acclimate it. It helps to prepare the container and water beforehand and to ask the breeder about the fish's previous environment and food.

Frequently asked questions about Pink Sapphire Medaka

Q.Can a beginner keep Pink Sapphire Medaka?
A.Its difficulty level is rated as beginner-friendly, and it can be raised with the basic care used for medaka. If you keep the water stable, change it moderately, and feed only what the fish can finish, it is an approachable variety even for a first-timer.
Q.How big do adult Pink Sapphire Medaka get?
A.They are small medaka, around 3–4 cm in total length, and individuals vary. Because they are small, elaborate equipment is not essential, but a container with some room lets you enjoy watching them swim.
Q.How long do they live?
A.A lifespan of about 2 to 3 years is a rough guide. Steady water management and daily observation are the foundation for keeping the fish healthy over the long term.
Q.How does the blue glitter look?
A.Blue glitter covers the whole back, and it is easiest to see when you look down from above. Paired with the pale pink body it looks like a gemstone, and the impression also shifts with the lighting and background.
Q.What should I check before bringing one home?
A.Ask the breeder about the fish's previous environment, the food it has been given, and its size, so you can match your care after it arrives. When it arrives, acclimate it to your water before moving it into the tank.
