Tricolor Taigaikou Medaka

Tricolor Taigaikou Medaka

Tricolor Taigaikou Medaka combine a striking white-and-orange-red tricolor pattern with the metallic sheen of Taigaikou, the body-glow trait derived from the Mikuni bloodline. Bred by Seirakuan in 2018 — hence the alternate name Sanshoku Mikuni — this variety pairs two prized traits in a single fish, but genetic fixation is low, making it genuinely difficult to consistently produce individuals where both the pattern and the glow express well. Because each fish's markings develop uniquely, no two look quite alike, which is why the variety is generally recommended for experienced keepers rather than beginners.

Tricolor Taigaikou Medaka key facts

Care level
Advanced
Lifespan
2-3 years
Size
Up to about 4cm SL
Temperature
18〜28℃
Diet
Prepared medaka food, green water
Lighting
External luminescence appears on the back and the tricolour pattern is read from the dorsal side, so the variety suits viewing and selection from above. The Medaka Web Encyclopedia recommends outdoor keeping and suggests shading half the container in summer.
Diet & Nutrition
Commercial prepared medaka food is the staple, given in an amount finished within a few minutes. Leftovers decay and foul the water, so adjust the quantity. Green water rich in phytoplankton suits fry rearing.
Water Temperature & Quality
Slightly acidic to slightly alkaline water is considered ideal, and the water drifts toward acidic as keeping continues. Around one water change per week is the guideline, and because sudden shifts in temperature or pH cause stress, acclimatise new fish by floating the bag. FishBase records the wild water chemistry of this species as pH 7.0-8.0 and hardness 9-19 dH.
Tank Mates & Compatibility
A peaceful schooling fish, normally kept as a group of the same variety. One litre of water per fish is the guideline against overcrowding; overstocking causes poor growth, reduced breeding, oxygen shortage and water fouling.
Breeding
Outdoors the spawning season runs from about April to October, once water reaches 18C or above with 12-13 hours of daylight. For year-round indoor breeding, 25-28C water and over 13 hours of lighting are the guideline. Eggs hatch at a cumulative 250 degree-days, about 10 days at 25C.
Health & Notes
The fixation rate is low and few fish show both the tricolour pattern and the luminescence well, so selection requires numbers. The further the light runs toward the head the better it is rated, and pattern and light must be judged together.

About Tricolor Taigaikou Medaka

An advanced improved medaka variety combining a white-and-red tricolor pattern with Taigaikou body glow. Low trait fixation makes well-expressed individuals hard to produce. Bred by Seirakuan; also called Sanshoku Mikuni.

7 things to know before welcoming a Tricolor Taigaikou Medaka

  1. 1For Experienced Keepers

Because this variety combines two genetically independent traits — the tricolor pattern and Taigaikou glow — trait fixation is unstable and fry can vary widely in how they turn out. It's best suited to keepers who already have medaka experience.

  2. 2Every Fish Is Unique

The balance of white and orange-red, how the markings spread, and how the body glow sits all differ from fish to fish. No two individuals show quite the same pattern, which makes selecting one part of the fun.

  3. 3Coloring Develops With Age

The tricolor pattern and body glow aren't fully defined in fry — they gradually emerge as the fish matures. The look at the time of purchase isn't necessarily the final form.

  4. 4Avoid Sudden Water Changes

As with improved medaka in general, large swings in temperature or water chemistry during water changes can stress the fish. Change water gradually, especially while a new tank is still settling in.

  5. 5Sunlight Brings Out the Glow

Taigaikou body glow shifts in appearance depending on how light hits it. Outdoor keeping or a spot with good natural light will show off the glow and tricolor pattern more vividly.

  6. 6Tops Out Around 4cm

Adults reach a maximum standard length of about 4cm, making this a compact variety that fits comfortably in small tanks or outdoor containers.

  7. 7Check Tankmates Before Adding

To appreciate the tricolor pattern and body glow clearly, keeping them alone or together with others of the same variety works best. If considering tankmates, check compatibility first.

Frequently asked questions about Tricolor Taigaikou Medaka

Q.Is this variety suitable for beginners?
A.Basic day-to-day care is manageable for anyone comfortable keeping medaka, but breeding and selecting for a clean tricolor pattern with strong body glow is considered advanced. Enjoying it simply as an ornamental fish is a good starting point.
Q.Is Sanshoku Mikuni a different variety?
A.No — it's the same fish. Sanshoku Mikuni is an alternate name used for Tricolor Taigaikou Medaka.
Q.How large do they grow?
A.They reach a maximum standard length of about 4cm, a manageable size even among medaka varieties.
Q.Can fry turn out without the body glow?
A.Yes. Whether both the tricolor pattern and Taigaikou glow are inherited isn't genetically fixed, so individual fry can vary in how they express these traits.
Q.When was this variety created?
A.It's a relatively recent variety, bred by Seirakuan in 2018.
