White Lame Miyuki Medaka

White Lame Miyuki Medaka

The White Lame Miyuki Medaka is an improved medaka variety with a white body accented by shimmering blue-toned glitter scales. Bred in 2012 by Toshihiro Wada, it was the very first "Lame" (glitter) Miyuki strain, and its distinctive blue sparkle — a departure from the silver glitter common before it — helped spark the ongoing glitter medaka boom. The glitter catches the light beautifully outdoors, and a school of these fish adds a lively sparkle to any tank or lotus pot. Considered hardy and beginner-friendly, it also does well in outdoor setups, making it an approachable choice for first-time medaka keepers.

About White Lame Miyuki Medaka

An improved medaka with a white body and shimmering blue glitter scales. The original Lame Miyuki strain from 2012, hardy and easy for beginners to keep.

7 things to know before welcoming a White Lame Miyuki Medaka

  1. 1Glitter shifts with the light

The blue glitter scales shift and shine depending on the angle of sunlight or aquarium lighting. Keeping them in a group under natural outdoor light tends to bring out the sparkle most beautifully.

  2. 2Hardy and beginner-friendly

This variety is considered beginner-friendly and generally tolerant, as long as sudden swings in water temperature or quality are avoided. It also adapts well to both indoor and outdoor setups.

  3. 3Adult size to expect

As adults, they stay compact, reaching a standard length of up to about 4 cm. This small size makes it easy to keep a group in a compact tank or lotus pot.

  4. 4Best kept and viewed in groups

Medaka are naturally social fish, so keeping several together lets them display more natural behavior. A school of glittering fish moving in unison is far more striking than a single individual.

  5. 5Same-species tankmates work best

Pairing them with other White Lame Miyuki or closely related strains is generally the safest choice. Crossbreeding with other improved medaka varieties can make it harder to pass on the distinctive white body and blue glitter to offspring.

  6. 6Prepare for acclimation before arrival

On arrival day, it helps to have a container and dechlorinated water ready in advance, so you can take time for a gradual acclimation and avoid sudden changes in temperature or water quality.

  7. 7Set up adequate space beforehand

Even though they're small, they're usually kept in groups, so setting up the tank, lotus pot, or filter beforehand helps the fish settle in calmly once they arrive.

Frequently asked questions about White Lame Miyuki Medaka

Q.Is the White Lame Miyuki Medaka easy for beginners to keep?
A.Yes, this variety is considered beginner-friendly. As long as you avoid sudden changes in water temperature or quality and keep up with basic care, major issues are uncommon.
Q.How big does it grow?
A.As an adult, it stays small, reaching a standard length of up to about 4 cm. This compact size makes it easy to keep several in a small tank or lotus pot.
Q.Can it be kept outdoors?
A.Since it's a hardy, beginner-friendly variety, it's well suited to outdoor keeping in a lotus pot or similar container. The glitter scales tend to look even more striking under natural sunlight.
Q.Can it be kept with other medaka varieties?
A.Cohabitation is possible, but if you're planning to breed them, pairing with the same variety is recommended. Crossbreeding with other varieties can make it harder to reliably pass on the white body and blue glitter to offspring.
