The Whippet is a medium-sized sighthound of British origin, beloved among the working class in the 19th century as the "poor man's racehorse." Bred from smaller Greyhounds for rabbit coursing and short-distance racing, the Whippet's streamlined silhouette — with its deep chest, tucked abdomen, and arched back — is a masterpiece of functional design. In temperament, Whippets are affectionate and gentle, bonding warmly with all family members including children. They are not particularly independent dogs and thrive on close human companionship, making them ideal for owners who want a devoted companion. Their dual nature is part of their charm: capable of reaching speeds exceeding 50 km/h when running, they transform into quiet, couch-loving companions the moment they are back indoors.
1Daily Exercise Is Essential
Whippets are sprint-driven sighthounds that need daily exercise to stay physically and mentally healthy. Providing opportunities for full-speed runs in a safely enclosed area, such as a dog park, several times a week is ideal. Insufficient exercise can lead to stress and unwanted behaviors.
2Sensitive to Cold Weather
With minimal body fat and a thin coat, Whippets are particularly sensitive to cold temperatures. During winter months, a dog coat and a warm indoor sleeping spot are important considerations. Limit outdoor time in cold weather accordingly.
3Strong Prey Drive and Escape Risk
As sighthounds, Whippets have a strong instinct to chase moving objects at full speed. Fencing of at least 1.5 meters is recommended, and off-leash time in unfenced areas can be dangerous. Always ensure exercise happens in a securely enclosed space.
4Calm and Gentle Indoors
Indoors, Whippets are remarkably calm and love lounging on soft furniture. They tend to bark infrequently, making them well-suited to apartment living. However, they enjoy close human company and some individuals may find extended periods alone stressful.
5Careful Nutrition Management
Due to their low body fat, weight fluctuations have a notable impact on their health. Feed a high-quality dog food formulated for medium breeds in appropriate portions. Their lean build can make ribs visible, so consult a veterinarian regularly to confirm they are at a healthy weight.

6Anesthesia Sensitivity
Sighthounds like Whippets metabolize anesthesia differently due to their low body fat, making them more sensitive to certain anesthetic agents. It is important to inform your veterinarian that your dog is a sighthound before any surgical procedure or treatment requiring sedation.
7Train with Patience and Praise
Whippets have a sensitive temperament and can react negatively to harsh correction or raised voices. Positive reinforcement using praise and treats is the most effective training approach. They can learn basic commands relatively easily, but consistency and patience are key to success.
