The Borzoi's origins trace back to 17th-century Russia, where the breed was refined as a hunting partner for nobility pursuing wolves across vast steppes. Its name derives from the Russian word for "swift," and this speed — reportedly exceeding 60 km/h — remains very much alive today. The breed is distinguished by a long, narrow head, a gracefully arched back, and a flowing, silky wavy coat that gives it an aristocratic beauty unlike any other breed. In temperament, Borzois are gentle and highly sensitive, showing deep affection for their family while maintaining an independent spirit that avoids excessive clinginess. They tend to be reserved with strangers and display the sharp vision and chase instinct characteristic of sighthounds outdoors, yet transform into remarkably serene couch companions indoors. For owners who can provide ample space to run and a calm home environment, the Borzoi brings a distinctive elegance and quiet companionship that enriches daily life in a truly special way.
1Needs Ample Space to Run
As a sighthound built for speed, the Borzoi needs regular opportunities to run at full sprint in a large, safely enclosed area. Frequent access to a spacious dog park or fenced field is ideal. Urban living with only short walks may not adequately meet this breed's exercise needs.
2Independent by Nature
Borzois possess a cat-like independence and tend to operate on their own terms rather than being highly biddable. They are affectionate but not clingy, appreciating a respectful personal space. Gentle, trust-based training is far more effective than forceful methods with this breed.
3High Prey Drive Alert
Originally bred to hunt wolves, Borzois retain a strong instinct to chase small moving animals. Living with cats, rabbits, or other small pets requires careful introductions and ongoing management. Keeping the dog on leash in unfenced outdoor areas is essential for safety.
4Coat Grooming Demands
The long, silky coat requires brushing two to three times a week, with heavier shedding during seasonal changes. Areas behind the ears and on the leg fringes are prone to tangles and need extra attention. Establishing a regular brushing routine early and scheduling periodic grooming appointments will keep the coat manageable.
5Bloat Risk Management
Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), or bloat, is a life-threatening risk common in deep-chested large breeds like the Borzoi. Avoid vigorous exercise immediately after meals and feed two to three smaller portions per day rather than one large meal. Seek emergency veterinary care immediately if bloat is suspected.

6Large-Breed Running Costs
As a large breed reaching 68–85 cm in height and 27–48 kg in weight, ongoing costs for food, veterinary care, and grooming are substantially higher than for smaller dogs. Food alone represents a significant monthly expense. Pet insurance is worth considering to help manage unexpected medical costs.
