The Standard Poodle traces its origins to medieval Europe, where it was bred as a skilled water retriever, particularly for hunting waterfowl. The name "Poodle" is thought to derive from the German word for puddle, reflecting the breed's natural affinity for water. Refined in France, it eventually became that country's national dog and served as the foundation for smaller Poodle varieties such as the Miniature and Toy. Physically, the Standard Poodle is a well-muscled, athletic dog with a distinctive curly coat, standing over 45 cm tall and sometimes exceeding 30 kg in males. It consistently ranks among the most intelligent of all dog breeds, with a remarkable capacity for learning and problem-solving. Deeply affectionate with family yet sensitive to its environment, it thrives when given both mental stimulation and consistent positive training. Its low-shedding coat is one reason many allergy-conscious households are drawn to the breed. Given the right care, exercise, and engagement, the Standard Poodle reveals a rich, endearing personality that makes it a truly rewarding companion.
1Large Build, High Exercise Needs
Adult Standard Poodles stand over 45 cm tall and typically weigh 20–32 kg. They need around one hour of vigorous exercise each day, and outdoor play or off-leash activities are highly beneficial. Insufficient exercise can lead to stress and behavioral issues, so make sure your lifestyle and living space can accommodate their energy level.
2Spacious Home Preferred
Due to their size, Standard Poodles can feel cramped in small living spaces. While apartment living is possible, a spacious home or easy access to parks makes a significant difference to their well-being. Ensuring enough indoor space to move freely is an important consideration before bringing one home.
3Highly Intelligent and Trainable
Standard Poodles rank among the most intelligent of all dog breeds and can learn commands quickly. However, they dislike boredom, so incorporating puzzle toys and training sessions into daily routines is recommended. Even first-time owners can train them successfully with consistency and patience.
4Regular Grooming Costs Add Up
While Standard Poodles shed very little, their coat grows continuously and requires professional grooming every four to six weeks. Each grooming session typically costs around 5,000–10,000 yen. Daily brushing at home helps prevent matting and keeps the coat in good condition between visits.
5Know Breed-Specific Health Risks
Standard Poodles are prone to certain conditions including hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and bloat (GDV), which is common in large, deep-chested breeds. Avoid vigorous exercise immediately after meals and schedule regular veterinary check-ups. Asking your breeder about genetic health testing results is also advisable.

6Emotionally Sensitive, Dislikes Solitude
Standard Poodles are highly attuned to their owners' emotions and can be sensitive to harsh tones or frequent scolding. They also tend to develop separation anxiety when left alone for extended periods. Households where the dog would be alone for long hours each day should consider arrangements such as a dog sitter or daycare.
7Understand the Full Lifetime Cost
Standard Poodle puppies typically range from 300,000 to 700,000 yen in Japan. Monthly ongoing costs including food, grooming, and veterinary care can range from 30,000 to 60,000 yen due to their larger size. With a lifespan of around 12–15 years, planning for long-term financial commitment is an important part of responsible ownership.
