The Italian Greyhound's history stretches back to antiquity, with depictions of similar dogs found in ancient Egyptian and Greek art. During the Renaissance, they became fashionable companions among Italian nobility and frequently appeared in portrait paintings of the era. Weighing just 3 to 5 kg, they are essentially a miniaturized Greyhound—defined by a streamlined silhouette, thin skin covered by a sleek and glossy short coat, and expressive, round eyes. They form deep bonds with their owners and often attach most strongly to one particular family member. Around strangers or in unfamiliar situations, they can be cautious, making thorough early socialization important. They enjoy a rhythm of energetic bursts of play balanced with quiet, close companionship—making them an excellent match for owners who love a devoted, gentle, and graceful dog by their side.
1Cold Protection Is Essential
With minimal body fat and a very short coat, Italian Greyhounds chill quickly when temperatures drop. Dog sweaters or jackets and a warm sleeping area are essential from autumn through spring. Dress them appropriately for outdoor walks as well.
2Fragile Bones Need Care
Their slender, delicate bone structure makes them prone to fractures from jumping off furniture or sudden impacts. Using pet steps, placing non-slip mats on floors, and minimizing high-impact activity—especially during puppyhood—helps prevent injury.
3Understand Their Sensitivity
They are highly sensitive to environmental changes, loud noises, and harsh correction, which can lead to behavioral issues or health problems under stress. A calm tone and consistent daily routine help them feel secure. Positive reinforcement training works far better than scolding.
4Indoor Exercise for Energy Release
Italian Greyhounds are built for short bursts of high speed and need regular opportunities to run and play. Safe off-leash areas or indoor play sessions are ideal. Avoid overly rough play, however, to protect their delicate limbs.
5Patience With House Training
House training can take longer than with many other small breeds. They may refuse to go outside in cold or rainy weather, so having an indoor toilet option alongside outdoor training is practical. Consistency and patience are key to success.

6Make Dental Care a Habit
Like many small breeds, Italian Greyhounds are particularly prone to dental disease. Getting them comfortable with tooth brushing from an early age and scheduling regular veterinary dental checkups are important for long-term health. Dental chews can serve as a helpful supplement.
7Understand the Cost of Ownership
Due to their susceptibility to patellar luxation and fractures, pet insurance is strongly worth considering to manage potential surgical costs. Budget also for cold-weather essentials such as clothing and heated bedding, which are not optional luxuries but practical necessities.
