The West Highland White Terrier, widely known as the Westie, originated in the Scottish Highlands and was selectively bred in the late 19th century to hunt rats and badgers on farms. The breed's distinctive white coat is said to have been favored for practical reasons — it made the dogs easy to spot in dense undergrowth. Compact yet sturdy, Westies typically weigh 4–7 kg and are instantly recognizable by their bright white double coat, rounded "apple" head, dark expressive eyes, and black nose. Their bold, confident personality and keen curiosity are balanced by genuine warmth and playfulness with family members, including children. Regular exercise and consistent grooming are necessary, but among terrier breeds, the Westie is considered relatively resilient with an average lifespan of 12–16 years. For active households seeking a spirited, loyal companion, the Westie is a rewarding and enduring choice.
1Regular Grooming Is Essential
The Westie's dense white double coat shows dirt and yellowing easily, requiring brushing 2–3 times a week and professional trimming every 2–3 months. Establishing a regular grooming routine early will help keep that signature white coat looking its best.
2Watch for Skin Conditions
Westies have a known genetic predisposition to skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis and Westie Lung Disease variants. If you notice itching, redness, or coat discoloration, consult your veterinarian promptly. Diet and choice of shampoo also play an important role in managing skin health.
3Understand the Terrier Stubborn Streak
Like most terriers, Westies have a strong independent streak and will often follow their own instincts. Consistent, positive-reinforcement training from puppyhood is key. What some owners call "stubbornness" is simply part of the breed's self-confident character — understanding this makes training far more rewarding.
4Use Caution Around Small Animals
Westies were originally bred to hunt rodents and small game, so a strong prey drive remains part of their instinct. Households with hamsters, birds, or other small animals should carefully manage interactions. Early socialization with other dogs and pets helps foster more harmonious relationships.
5Provide Adequate Daily Exercise
Despite their small size, Westies are energetic and benefit from 30–60 minutes of daily exercise. Insufficient activity can lead to nuisance barking or destructive behavior. A large yard isn't necessary — regular walks combined with mentally stimulating play can keep a Westie happy and well-balanced.

6Budget for Ongoing Care Costs
Ongoing costs include grooming fees (approximately ¥5,000–¥10,000 per month), pet insurance to cover potential skin conditions, and regular veterinary check-ups. Puppy prices from breeders typically range from ¥200,000 to ¥400,000. Planning a long-term budget before bringing a Westie home is strongly recommended.
7Address Barking Habits Early
Westies are alert dogs that tend to bark at unfamiliar sounds and strangers. Early socialization — exposing puppies to a variety of environments, people, and noises — is the most effective way to prevent excessive barking. If you live in an apartment, take proactive steps to manage noise out of consideration for your neighbors.
