The Shetland Sheepdog originated in the Shetland Islands of northeastern Scotland, where it was developed to herd sheep and poultry across rugged, windswept terrain. Through selective breeding with Rough Collies and other breeds, today's compact and graceful Sheltie was established. Their luxurious double coat comes in a range of colors including sable, gold, and blue merle, and their well-proportioned frame — typically 33–41 cm at the shoulder — gives them an elegance that belies their working-dog heritage. Shelties are renowned for their deep loyalty to family members and their sharp, attentive nature; they often seem to anticipate their owner's next move. Ranked among the most intelligent dog breeds, they excel at learning complex commands and thrive in canine sports such as agility and obedience. Their sensitive temperament means they do best in calm, stable households with gentle, consistent handling. A Sheltie that is well socialized and mentally engaged makes a devoted, affectionate companion for life.
1Tendency to Bark
Shelties have a herding instinct that makes them prone to barking at strangers and unfamiliar sounds. Teaching "quiet" commands from an early age helps manage this tendency effectively. If you live in an apartment or close quarters, consistent training is especially important.
2Regular Grooming Required
Their thick double coat requires brushing 2–3 times per week to prevent tangles and matting. During shedding seasons, daily brushing becomes necessary to manage heavy coat loss. Most owners combine home grooming with periodic professional salon visits.
3Moderate Exercise Needs
Shelties do well with 30–60 minutes of physical activity daily, such as walks or fetch. Incorporating mentally stimulating games and training sessions helps keep them content and balanced. Insufficient exercise can lead to excessive barking or other behavioral issues.
4Reserved with Strangers
Shelties are sensitive dogs that can be shy or cautious around unfamiliar people. Early socialization — exposing them to varied people, places, and sounds — is key to raising a confident adult dog. Always allow them to approach new people at their own pace.
5MDR1 Gene Mutation Risk
Some Shelties carry the MDR1 gene mutation, which causes sensitivity to certain medications including some antiparasitic drugs. Always inform your veterinarian of the breed before any treatment, and consider genetic testing if recommended. This is an important health consideration unique to herding breeds.

6Lifetime Cost Awareness
The initial purchase price for a Shetland Sheepdog typically ranges from 200,000 to 400,000 yen. Monthly ongoing costs — including food, grooming, and medical reserves — generally average 10,000–20,000 yen. Planning for dental care, regular grooming, vaccinations, and annual checkups is essential for responsible ownership.
