The Saluki's history stretches back thousands of years — its image appears in ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian art, making it one of the oldest documented dog breeds in the world. Bred by Arab nomads across the Middle Eastern desert, the Saluki holds a unique cultural status: despite Islamic traditions that consider dogs unclean, the Saluki was revered as a "gift of God" and treated with great respect. Physically, the Saluki is lean yet muscular, with long legs and a flexible spine perfectly engineered for high-speed pursuit. It comes in two coat types — feathered, with silky fringes on the ears, tail, and legs, and smooth, with short hair throughout. Coat colors range from cream and fawn to golden and black-and-tan. In temperament, the Saluki combines feline independence with deep devotion to its family. It rarely barks and carries itself with quiet dignity, yet becomes wonderfully affectionate with those it trusts. A calm, stable home environment allows this breed's sensitive nature and timeless elegance to truly shine.
1Remarkable Running Speed
Salukis can sprint at over 60 km/h, making off-leash exercise outside a securely fenced area very dangerous. Allow them to run freely only in large, enclosed spaces such as dog parks. Insufficient exercise can lead to stress and behavioral issues.
2Life with Small Animals
Salukis have a strong instinctive prey drive and may chase cats or small animals. While those raised together from puppyhood may coexist peacefully, supervision is always recommended to ensure the safety of all household pets.
3Sensitive and Gentle Temperament
Salukis are highly sensitive and do not respond well to harsh corrections or punishment-based training. Positive reinforcement using praise and treats is most effective. Patient, consistent training that builds trust is the key to a well-adjusted Saluki.
4Independent and Selective Affection
While deeply devoted to their owners, Salukis are independent and prefer to show affection on their own terms, much like cats. They can be reserved with strangers and new environments, so early and thorough socialization from puppyhood is essential.
5Joint and Bone Health
Because of their lean build, maintaining adequate muscle mass is important for joint protection. Excessive exercise during the growth phase can stress developing bones, so strenuous activity is generally discouraged before 12 months of age. Regular vet check-ups and weight monitoring are advised.

Care difficulty, lifespan, size and diet — all basics covered.
6Space and Exercise Needs
Salukis ideally need one to two hours of exercise daily and do best in homes with spacious, securely fenced areas. Apartment living is possible but requires a strong commitment to providing adequate exercise opportunities. Regular sessions of free running are needed, as walks alone are typically insufficient.
