The Beagle's origins trace back to England, where the breed was refined over centuries as a scent hound used to track small game such as rabbits. The name is widely believed to derive from words meaning "small" in Celtic or Old French. Compact in build at 33 to 40 cm tall and weighing 9 to 11 kg, Beagles most commonly appear in the classic tricolor of white, black, and tan, with their large drooping ears and round, expressive eyes giving them an enduringly appealing look. Their temperament is friendly and sociable, making them well suited to family life alongside children and other animals. That said, strong hunting instincts remain deeply embedded in the breed — a love of following scents and a tendency to vocalize are simply part of who they are. Embracing these traits and providing outlets for their natural drives is the foundation of a fulfilling life with a Beagle.
1They Bark and Howl
Beagles were bred to bay and bark to communicate with hunters, and this instinct remains strong. In apartments or densely populated neighborhoods, noise can be a concern for neighbors. Training and mental stimulation can help reduce excessive vocalization, but it may never disappear entirely.
2The Nose Rules Everything
The Beagle has one of the most powerful noses in the dog world, and once a scent catches their attention, recall becomes very difficult. Off-leash walks in open areas carry a real risk of them running off. Providing enrichment activities like nose work games channels this instinct in a positive way.
3High Exercise Needs
Adult Beagles typically need one to two hours of exercise each day. Without sufficient activity, they are prone to boredom-driven behaviors like excessive barking or destructive chewing. Active families or owners who enjoy outdoor activities will find Beagles to be enthusiastic companions.
4Watch Their Weight
Beagles are highly food-motivated and will overeat if given the chance, making weight management an ongoing priority. Measure meals carefully and limit treats to avoid obesity. Carrying extra weight puts strain on their joints and heart, so regular weigh-ins at the vet are recommended.
5Training Takes Patience
Beagles are intelligent but independent thinkers, which can make obedience training challenging. Positive reinforcement using food rewards works best, as they are highly motivated by treats. Short, consistent training sessions starting in puppyhood yield the best long-term results.

6Common Health Concerns
Beagles are generally a hardy breed, but they have known predispositions to epilepsy, hypothyroidism, and intervertebral disc disease. Their floppy ears trap moisture and debris, making regular ear cleaning essential to prevent infections. Annual or biannual veterinary checkups help catch any issues early.
7Expected Costs
Purchasing a Beagle from a reputable breeder typically costs between 200,000 and 400,000 yen. Monthly expenses for food and supplies generally run 10,000 to 20,000 yen, with routine veterinary care adding another 20,000 to 50,000 yen annually. Pet insurance is worth considering to manage unexpected medical costs.
