The Afghan Hound's origins trace back thousands of years to the mountain ranges of Afghanistan, where it was shaped into a supreme sighthound capable of pursuing gazelle and hare across rugged terrain at remarkable speed. Some historians suggest similar dogs appear in ancient Egyptian artwork, placing this breed among the oldest in recorded history. Its most striking feature is a silky, flowing coat that cascades from head to neck and body, creating a silhouette unlike any other breed. The body is tall and lean, with a prominent hip structure and arched loin that provides the mechanical advantage for explosive acceleration. In temperament, Afghans are deeply independent and initially reserved with strangers, yet reveal a gentle, devoted side to those who earn their trust over time. For experienced owners who appreciate a complex, beautiful companion, the Afghan Hound offers a uniquely rewarding relationship.
1Coat Care Is a Major Commitment
The Afghan's long, fine coat ideally needs daily brushing, with a minimum of two to three times per week. Neglect leads to painful mats and potential skin issues. Regular professional grooming sessions add up in cost, so budget accordingly before bringing one home.
2Independent and Stubborn by Nature
Bred to hunt independently, Afghan Hounds tend to follow their own judgment over commands. They are less responsive to obedience training than many breeds, requiring patience and consistency. Expecting a highly biddable dog often leads to frustration on both sides—understanding this temperament upfront is essential.
3Needs Space to Run Freely
Capable of speeds exceeding 60 km/h, Afghan Hounds need daily vigorous exercise beyond leash walks. Access to a secure, enclosed area where they can run at full speed is ideal. Their strong chase instinct also means fencing must be both tall and robust to prevent escapes.
4Caution with Small Animals
Strong prey drive means Afghan Hounds may view cats and small animals as quarry. Some individuals socialized from puppyhood can coexist peacefully, but results vary significantly between dogs. Consult an experienced breeder or trainer before adding an Afghan to a household with smaller pets.
5Sensitive and Emotionally Deep
Despite their aloof exterior, Afghan Hounds are emotionally sensitive and react poorly to harsh corrections or rough handling. Punishment-based training tends to backfire and erodes trust. Positive reinforcement with a calm, consistent approach is the most effective way to build a genuine bond.

6Watch for Eye and Hip Issues
Afghan Hounds have known predispositions to hereditary eye conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy, as well as hip dysplasia. When choosing a breeder, always request health clearances for the parents. Annual or biannual veterinary checkups help catch any issues early.
7Higher Upfront and Ongoing Costs
Afghan Hound puppies typically range from roughly 200,000 to 600,000 yen depending on lineage and breeder reputation. Ongoing costs include regular professional grooming (approximately 15,000–25,000 yen per session), food for a large breed, and adequate living space.
