The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel traces its roots to the royal courts of 17th-century England, where King Charles II was famously devoted to his small spaniels — a fondness that gave the breed its name. Crossbreeding with flat-faced dogs during the 19th century altered the original look, but early 20th-century enthusiasts worked to restore the longer-faced type, resulting in the Cavalier we know today. The breed's most striking features are its large, round, melting eyes and long, silky ears framed with flowing fringing. The coat comes in four recognized color patterns: Blenheim, Tricolor, Ruby, and Black and Tan. In temperament, Cavaliers are consistently gentle, sociable, and adaptable, forming easy friendships with children, seniors, and other animals alike. Their devoted, people-oriented nature — always wanting to be close to their humans — is one of the qualities owners most often cite as the heart of the breed's appeal.
1Be Aware of Heart Issues
Cavaliers are known to have a high predisposition to Mitral Valve Disease (MVD), a heart condition that commonly develops in middle to senior age. Regular cardiac check-ups with a veterinarian are essential throughout the dog's life. When choosing a breeder, ask to see cardiac health clearances for both parent dogs.
2Moderate Exercise Is Enough
Cavaliers do not require intensive exercise — a daily walk of 20 to 30 minutes is generally sufficient. That said, they enjoy outings and benefit mentally from regular outdoor stimulation. While not as heat-sensitive as flat-faced breeds, care should be taken to avoid exercising them during the hottest parts of summer days.
3Prone to Separation Anxiety
Cavaliers thrive on human companionship and can become stressed when left alone for extended periods. Households where all members work long hours should consider pet sitters or doggy daycare arrangements. Gradual alone-time training from puppyhood helps build confidence and independence.
4Floppy Ears Need Regular Care
The long, floppy ears of a Cavalier restrict airflow, making them prone to moisture buildup and ear infections. A routine of gently wiping the inner ear with a dog-safe ear cleaner once or twice a week helps prevent problems. Any unusual odor, redness, or excessive scratching should be checked by a veterinarian promptly.
5Regular Brushing Is a Must
The soft, silky coat of a Cavalier tangles easily, especially around the ears and leg feathering, making brushing three to four times per week advisable. Professional grooming is not strictly necessary but helps maintain a tidy appearance. Making brushing a calm bonding ritual from an early age helps the dog accept it comfortably.

6Weight Management Is Key
Cavaliers tend to have hearty appetites and can easily become overweight, which places extra strain on the heart and joints — areas already of concern for the breed. Treats should be given sparingly, and daily food portions adjusted based on the dog's weight and activity level. Regular weigh-ins at home or at the vet help catch gradual changes early.
7Cost to Expect
Puppy prices for Cavaliers typically range from approximately 300,000 to 700,000 yen depending on lineage and the breeder. Ongoing veterinary costs, particularly for cardiac monitoring, can be higher than for many other breeds, so enrolling in pet insurance before the dog develops any conditions is strongly advisable. Planning a lifetime budget that includes anticipated medical expenses is a wise step before bringing one home.
