The Chihuahua's origins trace to the Chihuahua state of Mexico, and the breed is believed to be descended from dogs used in ancient Aztec religious ceremonies. They arrived in North America in the late 19th century and have since become beloved worldwide. Their distinctive appearance includes a rounded "apple head," large erect ears, and expressive eyes, with two coat varieties: smooth and long. The standard weight range is 1–3 kg, making them among the smallest of all recognized breeds. In temperament, Chihuahuas are bold, assertive, and deeply affectionate, though they can also show a jealous streak. Despite their small size, they are unafraid to bark, so early training and socialization are essential. Their low exercise needs and indoor adaptability make them a popular choice for single-person households and older owners alike.
1Sensitive to Cold
Chihuahuas have very little body fat, making them prone to getting cold in winter or air-conditioned rooms. Dog clothing and pet-safe heaters can help maintain a comfortable body temperature. Aim to keep indoor temperatures between 20–25°C year-round.
2Bonds Strongly with One Person
Chihuahuas often form an intense bond with one person and can be wary of strangers or unfamiliar dogs. Early socialization — exposing your puppy to various people, sounds, and environments — is essential. A well-socialized Chihuahua grows into a confident and calm adult dog.
3Fragile Bones — Handle with Care
Chihuahuas have delicate, fine bones that are susceptible to fractures from falls or accidental steps. Ramps or steps to furniture can help reduce injury risk. Homes with young children should take extra precautions, and non-slip flooring is strongly recommended.
4Dental Care Is Essential
Due to their small jaws and crowded teeth, Chihuahuas are prone to dental disease and tartar buildup. Daily tooth brushing and regular veterinary dental checkups are highly recommended. Getting your puppy accustomed to having its mouth touched early makes lifelong dental care much easier.
5Low to Moderate Exercise Needs
Chihuahuas do not require extensive exercise — short walks of 15–30 minutes once or twice daily, plus indoor playtime, is typically sufficient. Avoid overly long or strenuous activities, as these can strain their small joints. Watch your dog's energy levels and adjust accordingly.

6Watch for Tracheal Collapse
Tracheal collapse, a condition where the windpipe weakens and flattens, is relatively common in small breeds like the Chihuahua. Using a harness instead of a collar helps reduce neck pressure. If you notice coughing or labored breathing, consult a veterinarian promptly, and schedule regular checkups for early detection.
7Understand the Lifetime Costs
Chihuahuas have a long lifespan of 13–18 years, so long-term financial planning is important. While food costs are relatively low, ongoing expenses include veterinary care (vaccines, checkups, dental cleanings) and grooming. Pet insurance is worth considering to help cover unexpected medical costs over your dog's lifetime.
