The Lagotto Romagnolo is an ancient breed originating in the Romagna region of northern Italy. Historically employed as a water retriever in marshlands, it later gained fame as a truffle-hunting dog across the hilly terrain of the Italian countryside—a role its extraordinary nose continues to fulfill today. The breed's most distinctive feature is its dense, curly coat that covers the body in near-uniform ringlets, coming in shades of off-white, brown, and roan. Its rounded head and endearing expression give it an unmistakably charming appearance. In temperament, the Lagotto is gentle, deeply loyal to its family, and patient with children. Highly intelligent and curious, it excels in activities that engage both mind and nose, such as nose-work sports and agility. While still relatively rare in Japan, its distinctive looks and manageable character are earning it a growing following among discerning dog lovers.
1High Exercise Needs
With a working retriever heritage, this breed ideally needs over an hour of exercise daily. Swimming is a natural strength and a great outlet for their energy. Insufficient activity can lead to stress and behavioral issues, so an active owner is a good match.
2Curly Coat Grooming
The dense curls require regular brushing to prevent matting. Professional trimming every few months is recommended. Shedding is minimal, but coat maintenance requires consistent effort and grooming costs.
3Intelligent and Trainable
Highly intelligent and responsive to positive reinforcement training. They learn commands relatively quickly but may seek their own entertainment when bored. Incorporating mental stimulation like puzzle toys and scent games into the daily routine helps keep them settled.
4Family and Child Compatibility
Gentle and affectionate, this breed tends to bond with the whole family. They generally get along well with children, though adult supervision during interactions with young kids is always recommended. Proper socialization helps them coexist with other pets.
5Finding This Rare Breed
This breed is extremely rare in Japan and typically sourced through specialist breeders. Importing may involve quarantine periods and additional shipping costs. Always verify the breeder's credibility, living conditions, and health management practices before proceeding.

6Common Health Considerations
Hip dysplasia and eye conditions have been reported in this breed, making regular veterinary check-ups important. Due to its rarity, domestic case data is limited, so finding a vet familiar with the breed beforehand is advisable. Requesting health screening results for the parents from the breeder is an important step.
7Estimated Ownership Costs
As a rare breed, puppy prices tend to be on the higher end. Ongoing costs include grooming, access to open spaces or water for exercise, and regular health check-ups. It is advisable to plan a long-term budget before committing to ownership.
