Paracentropyge venusta
A dwarf angel split between yellow on the lower front and deep violet-blue from the nape over the back and tail. Native to the Ryukyu and Izu Islands, it hangs upside down on cave ceilings. Hard to wean onto foods, so a demanding species.
The Purplemask Angelfish (Paracentropyge venusta) is a dwarf angelfish found in the western Pacific from the Ryukyu and Izu Islands of southern Japan to Taiwan and northern Luzon in the Philippines. It reaches 12cm total length. The two-tone pattern is yellow on the lower front of the body and around the snout, with blue spreading from the nape over the dorsal fin, rear body and tail; the anal and pelvic fins are yellow with blue margins, and the balance of colours varies between individuals. It lives at 10-40m in caves and under overhangs, typically hanging upside down beneath the ceiling, singly, in pairs or small groups. Its wild diet is unknown, and in captivity it often requires live foods at first. It is rare and expensive in the trade, but has been bred and reared in captivity. Provide 265L or more with plenty of live rock and hiding places. Shy when introduced, it becomes bolder toward similarly shaped fish as it grows. It may nip invertebrates and clam mantles, so use caution in reef tanks. The feeding challenge makes it an expert-level species.
