The Bluestriped Angelfish (Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis) is an angelfish of the family Pomacanthidae found in the western Pacific from southern Japan and Korea to Taiwan, southern China and the Malay Peninsula; the Japanese family name derives from this species. It reaches 22cm total length. Adults have vivid blue horizontal stripes on a yellow to tan body and a yellow caudal fin; in females the stripes run the full length of the body, while males have duller body stripes and blue lines on the face. Juveniles are black with a yellow bar behind the head and yellow markings on the fins. It is commonest on rocky reefs with large boulders and on rubble slopes at 2-30m, with juveniles staying close to crevices. It feeds on sponges and tunicates and is a protogynous hermaphrodite in which dominant females become males. Scarce and expensive abroad, it nevertheless often thrives in captivity: shy at first, it settles quickly in a stable tank. Provide 680L or more with plenty of hiding places and live rock. Semi-aggressive and prone to nipping stony and soft corals and clam mantles, so use caution in reef tanks. Overseas it is treated as a seasonal species with imports concentrated in summer.
