The Regal Angelfish (Pygoplites diacanthus) is a mid-sized angelfish of the family Pomacanthidae found across the Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Tuamotu Islands, north to the Ryukyu and Ogasawara Islands and south to the Great Barrier Reef and New Caledonia. It reaches 25cm standard length. Blue-edged white bars angle backward across an orange body; the rear dorsal fin is black or blue with close-set blue dots and the anal fin carries alternating yellow and blue bands. Red Sea and Maldives fish have a yellow breast while Pacific fish are blue-grey there. Juveniles carry a large dark spot at the base of the soft dorsal fin that fades with age. It inhabits coral-rich lagoons, reefs and cave surroundings from 0-110m, feeding on sponges and tunicates. In captivity it is hard to get feeding: choose a healthy specimen and offer fresh shrimp, chopped seafood, sponge-based angelfish preparations and spirulina-based herbivore foods. Provide 475L or more with plenty of live rock and hiding places, and introduce it first so it can claim territory. Avoid aggressive tank mates, and note that it may nip LPS corals and clams.
